I have a 4x12 loaded with Celestion 75's. I also have a 200w Hiwatt 4x12 with Fanes that is one of my favorite cabs ever. I have two 4x12's loaded with EVM12L's. Not a huge fan of Vintage 30's but when I had the WGS speakers I had two 4x12's loaded with those too.
That being said, I would never consider buying any more WGS after my experience with the ET65's and the Vet30 X pattern. It sure didn't seem like a case of new speakers that needed to get broken in (and after 3 days of having cranked up guitar played through them, they should have been broken in). They sounded wrong. I'll go with what I know works.
After that experience, I spoke with a friend who was the owner of both a guitar and amp company (at different times) who agreed with me on the tone of the WGS's and chastised me when I said that I had asked for suggestions from the guys at WGS. His take on them was that they were engineer types who had no clue what a good rock tone was. He mentioned that there were a few WGS models that he liked but I don't recall what they were. The ET65 and Vet30 weren't on his list either. My 2 cents.
Thanks for the info. I'd love to buy two Scumback M75s but I just can't justify it after having my amp modded.
Before I had my Plexi modded, I played it through my 4x12 with a BM75/GB mix and just with the BM75s and it gave the cab an open back feel with just the two speakers top loaded. I may just stick with that for a little while.
You mess around with that much?
Google "detuned cab". It can sound awesome with the right speakers. Try stacking the 2 speakers on top of each other ( 1 on top and 1 on bottom , vertical not diagonal) and experiment with covering the other speaker holes. It usually adds bass and makes the cab sound deeper than it is.
I've done that and that's how my cab currently sits aside from plugging the two holes. I haven't played through my cab in six months though (Scumback BM75 65w currently loaded). I loved how it sounded with my stock Plexi. I'm just curious to hear it with my modded amp once it comes back.
It definitely made the cab lighter!
