What are the best Speakers, and 4x12&2x12 Cabs for METAL?

Thanks guys, please keep it coming. I am infact researching all of this, and will be documenting it as well. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Ralph! I sent an email up north, and asked for input as well. That should be interesting.

I am probably in the minority on this but I hate V30's for metal. I think they sound great for clean and mid gain tones or even leads. I know most of the metal recordings probably use them but I just don't get along with them. I really like EVM12L's or GK100's. And with certain amps the Vader sounds amazing too. But if you're used to V30's you may have a hard time jiving with anything else.

I used to have a 1960's over sized Marshall angled cab, with the salt and pepper grill. It had original Green Backs in it. Tolex was ripped to shit on it. It sounded awesome. But I lost it after my Marshall JTM 45 got lifted. I think it was from the 60's too. I miss that amp. It was awesome.

I'd probably think you'd be safe with an X pattern V30/K100 set up.

Love my rear-loaded Uberkab. Such a wonderful, full sound.

I used to hate V30's to until I found out that there were different versions.

Marshall uses an OEM version and I find them to be harsh and ear fatiguing and everything I hat in a speaker.
For years Ive always played Marshall cabs with V30's loaded in them and Ive always hated them.
When Boogie came out with the Recto cabs loaded v30's it kind of turned my head but I figured that it was the cab until I learned that
Boogie had there own recipe for a v30.

So now you have the Marshall V30, Boogie V30 and of course celestions own V30 and I can tell you from experiance that they all sound different.

These days I favor the Chinese celestion v30's. I think they sound killer and that's comming from a guy who hated them for many years.

Im running a marshall mode 4 cab with WGS retro 30s and celestion gt 75s in a cross patern and it sounds so bad ass. I live it alot better than the marshall vintage 30s it had before. A very metal friendly cab and speaker combination in my opinion.

What amp?

Fortin Beast. aka, Modded 2203KK

I had that amp at my house for a bit (I was the one who made the clips for Ralph) ;)

I'm jealous you got that thing. I really wanted it, but a fourth Fortin is hard to justify

I would go for an Engl Pro V30 or a Mesa Recto V30 cabinet and you'll be good. The Recto cabs can be had cheap. That amp is super tight, and could use a cabinet with a little "give" to add to the mass of the bottom.

Keep in mind that Mike voices his amps through a Freyette Fatbottom Cabinet front-loaded with V30s; you're likely to enjoy a similar cabinet with his amps.

These work best for me:

Engls77.jpg

... and I've owned everything else. Marshall, Mesa, Bogner, Fryette, Mills, CAE, blah, blah, blah.

V30s + GT75s in an X pattern.

Also I absolutely agree with Gainfreak. Chinese V30 ftmfw. Marshall V30s are too bright, and Mesa V30s are to dark/dull. Chinese are just riiiight.

Well there you go, the guy that made the clips which btw also has a very very good ear and can play. Recto cabs can be had for 40% new prices and local.

Interesting.
That's going to be a very bright, super tight, very straight-ahead-direction sound. I owned a Diezel frontloaded 4X12 with V30s. Worked great with my Herbert, but not much else.

Awesome Clips you did of the Fortin Stuff. That with combination of Ralph's informative charm really pushed me over the edge to buy it. I know what you mean, I'm jealous that you have 2 more Fortin Amps than myself :gethim:  I am definitely going to get another one for sure.

I haven't heard the Engl Pro V30. But I know the Reto Cab Standard V30. So you are saying the over size Recto Cab is a good match for this amp? I was wondering also about the Recto Traditional 4x12 V30 cabs, which to my knowledge is basically the Stiletto cab dimensions. I was initially reluctant to go for the Recto cabs, because from my experience the have been a bit boomy. I am most definitely selling my Marshall 1960 Vintage Cab. I want something built really well. It has the Marshall V30s in it. Please feel free to share more with me. I am not familiar with Freyette Fatbottom Cabs. Money should be an issue, but this isn't a hobby for me, it is an investment. I am willing to go as far as I need to get what is best for what I am doing. I also need a 2x12 Cab. One that will do well on its on or paired to which ever 4x12 I end up with. So combination suggests are welcomed as well. I have always like the sound of V30 speakers.

v30s are a staple for anything high gain. they have never let me down.

Thanks for the kind words dude

Both the Recto cab (Standard) and Stiletto Cab (Traditional) are awesome. The mids are shifted down a bit on the Standard cabinets, but if you like that sound, then go for it

Rectifier cabs are not "flubby" to me; however they do have more excursion than most cabinet designs it seems. They actually don't have a ton of low end, because V30s really aren't THAT low end heavy as speakers. If you're using a loose sounding amp, the Recto cabinet can be the wrong match. The Stiletto is a great option, but the Rectos and Stilettos are very similar and I obviously own one already.

The Engl Pro cabinet is definitely a tighter cabinet audibly, and is bitier, but the low end is a bit subdued. The projection is out of this world though.

I would get an Engl Pro Cabinet from somewhere you are allowed to return it and see if you really love it. It could be the right match for you. I wouldn't go Freyette, because you're going to have to swap speakers, and it's just more work. In my opinion, I'd rather have something that works off the bat.

The Recto 2x12 is great too. It sounds the most like a Recto 4x12. However, I don't like the Engl 2x12s. They're definitely too stuffy for my taste.

Cheers,

Greg

Thought he would like the Vader 4X12
@ 480 Crushing Watts for an all out Metal
Onslaught!!!
But, You and I and select others Love the
Engl 4X12's. I love the way the V30's sound
through these Beasts! I A/B'd many cabinets
against the Engls and they all came up short.
(Marshall 1960 A,B, Mesa Standard, Soldano,
Custom Audio, Bogner, Orange)
They all couldn't Hang with the Engl's,
so all the other cabs got sent packing and
the Dual Terror's, continue their Sonic Devastation.

Lolzgreg,

What what the cab you used to demo this Amp? Also what where the settings on the Beast, particularly the Frequency shift and Boost on or off?
