What are the WORST hyped pieces of gear you've owned..

Vai was hyping them pretty hard for a while

He was endorsing them, I don't think i've ever heard the guitar community as a whole "hyping" carvin amps

If anything it's always been the opposite AFAIK - like I said, maybe it was different in the 70s or something? Not since ive been alive

Not that I think they sound terrible, I just don't think they count as "hyped"

You’re bringing the lulz. Honk honk, goose got me tickled, and subsequent replies kept me laughing.

Gear that had fallen short for me: Hipshot. I know I’m a minority on this, but I have multiple Hipshot products, and all of them are fine and preform okay. Everything from Hipshot I have, however, there are similarly priced products from other brands that I like way better.

The 2nd thing is my love/hate for headless guitars. Love the form, the ergonomics, lightweight etc. But every headless I’ve owned (still have 2) and the ones I’ve tried, all fairly expensive guitars: They all have this strident directness that is just not pleasant to me. I can get decent tones, but the directness (don’t know another descriptive that works) is always there. Maybe more of a feel thing, but it makes my balls itch.

If anyone else perceives the same thing with headless guitars, and have found a headless design that doesn’t have that characteristic, I’d love to hear about it. I’d love for a headless to have a chance at being one of my favorite guitars, but so far, the direct feel thing has been a negative for every headless I’ve played.

I get it about hipshot. They aren't bad at all, but I similarly don't understand why everyone shits their pants over them

Headless guitars are fucking awful and probably the best example of overhyping anyone has come up with yet

Monster Cables indeed (I still own two, but basically never use them).
Capacity per foot is at least double of what affordable, good cables have.

Revv amp; forgot which one, some 4 channel 120W version that was supposed to be 'head and shoulders above' my Engl Invader 100 in terms of tone and versatility.
What a lifeless, sterile, bland POS that was...

And +1 on @DanTravis62 regarding Friedman BE100; my band did a gig once with the Iron Maidens and Courtney was playing the BE100 while their subbing "Murray" played a DSL. The DSL tone matched the kerrang-y Maiden tone, but that BE100 was an overly thick, smooth blanket that lacked the cutting edge.

Diezel VH4. I wanted to like that amp so bad I bought one three different times. Couldn’t get along with any of them sadly.

Hmm... Probably the Duncan Custom. Not enough midrange or aggression to it. Too polite IMO. I still got one in a guitar and I always wonder "what happened to my tone" when I use that guitar. Maybe I'll learn to like it?

So I just installed a Custom in a Strat. It's definitely scoop-ished, but I do find it pretty aggressive. To me it's similar to a Duncan Distortion but a little less compressed and PAF-y (slightly).

before I played the BE i thought it was one of those cases where everyone just dials it in weird/wrong because of something they were hearing in the room

After playing a few, it's just inherent to the amp

And listen theres situations where that sound might be preferable for some people i dunno

I'm just saying in relation to the massive hype holy FUCKBALLS was that a disappointment

For me, the Friedman BE100 Deluxe. On paper it should have been the perfect amp for me. In reality, I could not get a sound I really liked out of it. I know others swear by them, but I prefer more teeth than it can deliver.

the VFE Standout. wasnt even sure mine was working cause it does next to nothing, but im told thats what makes it so great or something :dunno:
I came in here to say the exact same thing. I can't believe the prices those shitboxes used to fetch. Beyond overhyped and overrated.

Most overhyped trash would be anything with the name Fortin.
