What are the WORST hyped pieces of gear you've owned..

Off the top of my head, the EVH 5153 (OG 100 watt) and 5153 50 watt (also OG) were disappointing.

I wanted in a big way Kramer guitars to work for me, but they just never did.

Fenders QC on amps has gone MASSIVELY downhill too

Have you seen the psionic vids where he goes through the DRRI/customs?

They use shit components, have all kinds of faults, and are haphazardly thrown together

Which sucks ass because fender amps have an amazing legacy that they should be living up to
I opted out of owning any of those other than as a throwaway amp when I saw the ribbon wiring connecting boards on the Hot Rod series and Deluxes. It's to the point where you have a lot of cheap amps with board mounted jacks, just asking for problems, never mind the tube receptacles. In my view Fender started it's downhill trajectory when they sold to CBS. It's just in free fall now.

I'm not really talking about the HRDs, those are cheap as hell and obviously a different ballgame completely - it's a cheap channel switcher, and sounds quite good (at least the clean channel does lol) for how ungodly inexpensive they are.... at least for the year or two that they last. It's cheap shit but it's meant to be cheap shit

The DRRIs are the real tragedy because those are well into the "big kid amp" price range - for fuck's sake, you can get an honest to god high quality guitar amp for those prices (You could literally buy a Dr Z Maz, TopHat Club Series, or any number of great clean amps)

They are just cashing in on the logo as much as they possibly can, and it's horrific. Especially considering that construction is on the same level as the hot rod amps which cost literally half as much.

SLO Mini amp. Sounded like a baby monitor.

Dimarzio Tone Zone. I can't tell you how much I hated that. I immediately ripped it out.

I'm sure I'll think of more. Worst feeling in the World when you open up your new gear and panic, realizing you didn't get what you were expecting.

Dude I hate the tone zone so much :hys:

It is such congested diarrhea

It's crazy because with the descriptions of how bass heavy it is you would think it sounds like an SH-5 or an SH-14 or something, and no, no it doesn't. It's like taking the angry goose character of the super distortion and just removes all the high end to the point where it sounds like you put 4 IRs on the same track

Which fender combo amp? There's a million, and some offer shitty tone for dollars (the custom shop ones) some offer great tone to dollar ratio (HRD, Bassman LTD) and some are cheap AND shitty like the blues juniors

All the tweed, brown, black, and drip edge silverface amps are great sounding of course, but the vintage tweed/brown/blackface are all stupid expensive
they are ok . But def too hyped

they are ok . But def too hyped

Which? like i said there's a million and they vary wildly in both price AND quality

IMO I think the blackface amps are overhyped - I don't think they sound very different from the drip edge or silverface ones at all

The tweed and brownface fenders though, those are legitimately cool AF sounding

Diezel Herbert. More compression than gain and there was no shortage of gain...so compressed it gave a legato character to even the most staccato passages.

Wait whut?

This Neve dp'd?! 😱

Back in the 90s I had this guitar that sounded great and I kept hearing about the Tone Zone. I remember plugging my guitar it was installed by a guitar tech and it was like the inner soul of that guitar was destroyed. No life to it.

Dude it can sound very raw . The mid cut is used wrong …. Never turn that up .

For me it was the Mesa Roadster.

I had an og Tremoverb that was awesome and I stupidly sold. I figured that more is more, right? So I bought the Roadster. What a piece of bovine excrement. Couldn't sell it quick enough...

I did some session work with it at the time I owned it. I went back and re-recorded the sessions for free. That is how much I hated that amp...

I can say truthfully overhyped or not, I'd be about it.
Trying BAE next for a 1073 flavor. If that doesn’t scratch the itch ima drop it. Not worth 10-12bands for an OG Neve.. Tube Tech MP2A bitch slapped the ams neve. Maybe I’m just a tube guy.
