I've heard some say that digital delays are better with hi-gain, while others say it's fine to use analog

when I say hi-gain I mean 80s hi gain and smooth lead sounds, not modern metal

The two best I've used have been the TC Flashback and the MXR Carbo Copy.

whatever you like as long as its in the loop and suit your rig to avoid phase issues.

Chandler SDE is the best I've used. Digital but very warm. Sounded great with a SLO.

Alesis Quadraverb in the loop. So long as you don't need tap tempo, it's great for the 80's thing.

the hardwire delay works and sounds great. you can get them used for fairly cheap as well.

I'm really happy with my Keeley-modded Ibanez analog delay. I rarely cut it off in my SLO clone's loop.

However... If you want it off often, then I wouldn't recommend it. There is a noticeable drop in volume when engaged. I suspect it's because of the true-bypass switch from Keeley. It probably always dropped volume when stock. Back when I needed more versatility with it, I used a BBE Boosta Grande after it, and switched the whole loop off to go dry. A lot of hassle, but it sounds so friggin' good when engaged.

I use a Korg DL8000R and TC 2290. Both are excellent. The Korg is the sleeper.

Another vote for the Hardwire DE7. The modulation setting is great!

I think just about any delay will work. With higher gain it's more important to get the mix level right. It can get sloppy really quick. Ironically, filtered repeats are useful to help keep it cleaner sounding.

i have not found a delay that i like more than the El capistan. I have owned the carbon copy, fractal, belle epoch, hardwire, and tc flash back. I pretty much ended my search for a delay once i found that. You can really dial the cap in with high gain because it has a tape bias, mix, and low cut/tone. The belle epoch is awesome but the preamp just killed it for me.

I've been using the DD-500 with my XTC and it sound fabulous in the loop.

Strymon Timeline - Owned many delays over the years, this doesn't colour my tone, is programmable and sounds awesome

Based on the smorgasbord of delays listed, I think this one is the consensus.
