Got a bone stock '72 50 watter and it's a proper amp. You can play metal with it without a boost with volume on 5 (volume stops increasing much after 3 on the dial). It is obviously loud but you can get a good amount of gain at reasonable gig/rehearsal volumes without having to use any pedals or an attenuator.

I read on a few occasions that the '72s had more gain for some reason, anyone can confirm and/or knows why? Mine starts to break up past 2-3 on the volume and can do really nice high gain tones.

I think the 100-watters have a lot more headroom. Mine with the volume on 5 is about ready to kill small animals that might stray too close to the cab.

The best sounding transformer to my ears isn't he Dagnal l C1998 used from 67-70.

Sorry to resurrect from 3 years ago…
You guys with ‘67’s,
What are your serial #’s ?
My ‘67 Superlead JTM45 100 is #10033

I remember once seeing a website that head people listing their serial numbers and pics on these early Marshall heads, does anybody know where that is?

I’ve got a bone stock 1973 50 watt NMV and it is just hands down the best sounding amp I’ve ever owned. Period. I am currently feeding it a BE OD DLX, a Pinnacle Deluxe, and a Suhr Eclipse and it just kills. Each pedal had its own unique ‘flavor’ but all the rich harmonic overtones are coming from the head. It is the ultimate Amp in a Box platform.
