Does anyone know if Metallica used the vented 84’-85’ G12T-75s, or if they used the non vented 86’ or later first gen G12T-75 speakers in the 1960A cab?
The Marshall 1960A and B cabs both came loaded with G12T-75s and some models also came with G12-65 speakers as well. MOP for sure used the 75s, AJFA also used them im almost 100% sure, but the first gen had 2 different models and they had different tones.Neither. 8 ohm Marshall Vintage speakers. Probably also used their EV loaded Mark series half back cabs, since it sure sounds like it
The vented ones have more midrange. They sound sort of like a higher wattage greenback and more similar to the G12-65’s. The non-vented first versions are more scooped in the mids with stronger lows and highs and imo better cleans if that matters. Both nice speakers, just differentMaybe a better question is, whats the tonal difference between the vented and non-vented first gen G12T-75 speakers (early 80s white label)?

They never used angled cabs to record or get their tone liveThe Marshall 1960A and B cabs both came loaded with G12T-75s and some models also came with G12-65 speakers as well. While I don't disagree with this assessment, please let it be clear that when you're talking about non-vented early ones (with the serifed font label), they are no where near as scooped or even fizzy as the later ones were. The vented ones have more midrange. The Mesa Half back cabs I mentioned earlier were always angled. They never used angled cabs to record or get their tone live
Agree. I have a pair of late 80’s cabs with non-vented, white label G12T-75s and they sound much clearer and more articulate than any of the later ones I’ve played through. While I don't disagree with this assessment, please let it be clear that when you're talking about non-vented early ones (with the serifed font label), they are no where near as scooped or even fizzy as the later ones were.
Source: I got both.
But yeah, the vented ones are pretty close in sound to a G12-65 and apparently the only technical difference was the coil former material; glass fiber or kapton.
I have some these also. Great speakers.Agree. I have a pair of late 80’s cabs with non-vented, white label G12T-75s and they sound much clearer and more articulate than any of the later ones I’ve played through.
They used those ?The Mesa Half back cabs I mentioned earlier were always angled.
Alongside the Marshalls. They used those ?
Yes, definitely no fizz at all with them nor as scooped as they later became, but I was just comparing it to the vented version in my description. They are much better than those later ones. They are very nice speakers and imo a bit underrated vs the vented versionsWhile I don't disagree with this assessment, please let it be clear that when you're talking about non-vented early ones (with the serifed font label), they are no where near as scooped or even fizzy as the later ones were.

Theres a picture of the cab used to record both MOP and Justice I believe and it was indeed an angled cab. They never used angled cabs to record or get their tone live
I’d never use an angled cab to capture giant rhythm tones . They are hollow compared to straightTheres a picture of the cab used to record both MOP and Justice I believe and it was indeed an angled cab.
