What model G12T-75s were used on AJFA?

Does anyone know if Metallica used the vented 84’-85’ G12T-75s, or if they used the non vented 86’ or later first gen G12T-75 speakers in the 1960A cab?

Neither. 8 ohm Marshall Vintage speakers. Probably also used their EV loaded Mark series half back cabs, since it sure sounds like it

The Marshall 1960A and B cabs both came loaded with G12T-75s and some models also came with G12-65 speakers as well. MOP for sure used the 75s, AJFA also used them im almost 100% sure, but the first gen had 2 different models and they had different tones.

Maybe a better question is, whats the tonal difference between the vented and non-vented first gen G12T-75 speakers (early 80s white label)?

The vented ones have more midrange. They sound sort of like a higher wattage greenback and more similar to the G12-65’s. The non-vented first versions are more scooped in the mids with stronger lows and highs and imo better cleans if that matters. Both nice speakers, just different

+1 my exact analysis as well. I prefer non-vented later models.

A RTer has a cab very close to the serial# of the cab in the pics of the session. His has vented 75s. They were vented when first introduced in 84; and sometime in 86 the vents disappeared as I’ve had 2 cabs from 86 one with vents, and one without. Braintheory’s description is spot on.

They never used angled cabs to record or get their tone live

While I don't disagree with this assessment, please let it be clear that when you're talking about non-vented early ones (with the serifed font label), they are no where near as scooped or even fizzy as the later ones were.
Source: I got both.

But yeah, the vented ones are pretty close in sound to a G12-65 and apparently the only technical difference was the coil former material; glass fiber or kapton.

Agree. I have a pair of late 80’s cabs with non-vented, white label G12T-75s and they sound much clearer and more articulate than any of the later ones I’ve played through.

I have some these also. Great speakers.

Modern 75s that I've played were harsh.

Yes, definitely no fizz at all with them nor as scooped as they later became, but I was just comparing it to the vented version in my description. They are much better than those later ones. They are very nice speakers and imo a bit underrated vs the vented versions

I like the G12-65 T3120’s more (more complex tone), but the vented 75’s I remember sounding similar. I never properly compared them like I did with the vented and non-vented ‘80’s T75’s

So then what version of the early 80s G12T-75s would yall choose for a AJFA tone, the vented, or the non-vented. The speakers are really a huge part in Metallicas tone on RTL, MOP, and AJFA. Getting the speaker correct is in my opinion the only way I can actually attempt to replicate the tones in anyway.

Theres a picture of the cab used to record both MOP and Justice I believe and it was indeed an angled cab.
I’d never use an angled cab to capture giant rhythm tones . They are hollow compared to straight
