Hello!
I've got a Fender Hotrod Deluxe. Normally I play my Diezel Herbert and my main rig the vast majority of the time, but I bought it for a good price so I have a combo I can take to a quick jam here and there when it'd be too much bother to spend half an hour packing and moving the half ton of "proper" rig.
It's got a pretty nice clean and the light bluesy tone, just doesn't do it for me really when at any kinda higher gain. Seems to just go woolly, and not bite enough. So I'm after suggestions for what I could ad to it that'd give me what I want. Obviously this things never gonna match full on heavy of the Diezel, I wouldn't expect it to, but I want to be able to get more full-on heavy rock out of it (more along the lines of Tool/Soundgarden/heavy grunge than some kinda full on extreme metal 7-string Djent or death metal). Flexibility is good too.
I also don't wanna spend much money since this isn't my main rig, unless you suggest it really is worth spending more will make all the difference and I can use it for other things. So, available 2nd hand or cheap is good. Since the thing is made of chipboard it's probably never gonna sound that great any way.
I'm also open to other ideas to improve it's performance...
Would a power soak help much. (just a power soak I tried briefly at low volume didn't give me what I wanted though)
Should I try one of these mod kits to make it less woolly?
Or am I pissing into the wind is this just not the amp for me and I'd be better off buying nothing, saving a load of money, and just selling it and getting a combo with a lead channel I prefer further down the line.
Totally random ideas to get the ball rolling: Was hoping to try a Wampler Dual Fusion at some point to see if it has enough gain, as it looks flexible, 2 stackable modes, would be a good long term investment. But can't find it 2nd hand and is more money than I wanted to spend at the moment. Also pondered an OCD as that seems to be in the distortion/overdrive should-be-enough-gain point, there's quite a lot about 2nd hand, or the Joyo rip-off of it as they're £30 new!
