I'm hearing a stock Super Lead variac'd down for a little extra compression and a little spongier low end. Donn defintely put some schmutz on it to turn that into the finished VH1 product.
Of all the things in the universe that could make me change my "tone" - both my guitar tone, and my slightly sardonic, long-suffering posting style - someone else sounding like EVH is the last thing that would cause it

Most people can’t tame a stock Marshall at ear bleeding levels and boosted with a simple echoplex and still play as cleanly as Eddie did. It’s absolutely nothing to hide behind and insanely unpleasant from a players perspective. To do that for an entire show is mind blowing to me. Anyone chasing that era should be spending more time wood shedding than amp tweaking.

That's the real disconnect for the people who know that this tone is a stock plexi, and the people who are convinced theres some secret mod
As someone who literally played like this, with a stock marshall at ear bleeding levels for years in clubs (sometimes with a power brake!) it's obvious to me. And it's going to be obvious to anyone else who has that experience "riding the tiger" - especially on stage in front of people.
Riding your volume knob on a cranked amp on the verge of exploding, trying to control your dynamics, the feedback, and making it work - that used to be the standard way everyone played guitar at every local gig in america and europe for decades.
The ampchaser types dont realize when people say "its in the hands" or "it's the player" it doesn't just mean his playing technique, they also mean the way he controls the amp when he plays.
Edward used a variac and the lowest he went with a variac was 60 volts, he used also explained that his Marshall plexi(plexis in general) was extremely loud and the variac help tame the volume.

This... 1000%. Small stage, loud as hell drummer, 100w NMV Marshall into a single 4x12 with just a cable, no effects, no gate. Do that and make it work and you have my attention.
Dave as well as many have gone on record multiple times that whatever the trim pot on the back of the amp was, it was removed long before anyone who’s come forward got to peek.
If they don’t even know what a knob did, don’t tell me anyone knows whether it was modded etc.Cant convince me otherwise
