What's the best high gain amp you've played?

Fryette....

I prefer the Deliverance & Sig X - But anything by Fryette. I like the sound of a lot of different amp builders & models. Fryette - Tone that actually works with a band or recording. Very low noise - never need a noise gate. ..... And most important - actually has dynamics. Most high gain amps are way to compressed & do not cut in a mix very good - for my taste.

6505+. 8) It sounds great to me and is more versatile than I feel people credit it. Keeping the gain under control definitely helps!

I've had Fryette's and will likely have them again.

The D60 is - to me - still to this day one of the best, and most underrated heads out there. I love what it can do.

It is difficult to find a more versatile - simple amp. Lots of cool amps out there - Fryette just fit my taste & needs better than the rest.

I owned the D120, but yes I agree. Awesome amp. Such big, tight tones!

D120 is what I use. When I get the power amp cooking it reminds me of driving a bulldozer.

I can't imagine what the 120 would sound like power-wise in order to get the "tubes cooking". Man, that'd be Richter Scale material. I dug the D60 as it was easier to push into that territory without rendering me impotent.

Fryette 50 or 100CL. Never played either Deliverance, but have previously owned UL, CLX, and Sig X, and the CLs just have something special and a little different than the rest to me. VH4 is in second place. There really isn't any need for a third place after those...

:worship: Diezel Herbert 8 years still the sound in my head !
180 watts makes you feel indestructible !

Finding high gain without high noise has been a real adventure.

We both know, it sure has been an Adventure Steve.
So Far the Carol-Ann Triptik 100 and Diezel D-Moll
are the Quietest High Gain Amps, I have owned to date.

Going by amps i have actually played... There are 5 that have truy impressed me. In no order the Diezel Herbert, Diezel VH4, Cameron CCM, Suhr PT100 and the VHT UL. If I had to pick one it would prolly be the VHT UL but the PT100.... I'll flip a coin...

Depends on my mood at the time. I always seem to go back to BOGNER. I'm regularly impressed and satisfied with my current Bogner line-up (Uber's and Ecstasy's). I had a 2007 VH4 a few years back and it was pretty impressive, and remember the Mesa Mark IV being pretty cool as well.

If I had to pick one: SLO.

Honorable mention to the VH4 and Fryette Deliverance for crushing, huge rhythm tone. Love the Marshall 2203/2204, but not "high gain." For singing, sustaining, living/breathing high gain tone, the SLO is jaw dropping IMHO.

Tough to choose one. I think for high gain in any situation I'd say my fav has been the VH4. Every time I play one it just kills.
Also loved my modded recto, MarkIV, Ecstasy 101b, Engl Invader among others

Can't decide between the VH4, Uberschall Twin Jet, and SLO100 (not as high gain but still). :)

You could pose the topic "best amp ever of all time" on RT and get the same answers. :)
Mine would have to be MKIV though.

That doesnt make sense. I know its Friday night, but you couldn't be that drunk

There are a lot of players here that like modded marshalls. A LOT. But there are a lot of great amps that are recommended here that aren't popular. I'd put the knowledge here against any other board and I have a feeling we'd come out ok.
Yeah man I was just making a small joke- referring to how a lot of people on here like high gainers, myself included. Wasn't meant to be a slam.
And agreed, the knowledge here is some of the best I've read. I've learned a lot since I've joined.
For what it's worth, I wasn't drinking last night, but I'm pretty drunk now.

I've only owned one high gain amp so naturally it's the best I've played: Rhodes Colossus. :D 4 independently EQed channels: clean, crunch, and lead x2, and there's a footswitchable gain boost on crunch and lead channels (also independent). You can really hear each guitar's character come through on this amp it's that transparent.

I've also tried a 5150-III 50W and Fender Machete in the stores and liked the sounds I got from them. I would like to try/own a Marshall style high gainer one day.
