What's the point of chasing someone else's tone?

My curiosity or uhh ocd compels me to understand the nuances of everything my favorite guitar players use or do. I have a few different “tone bible” files that cover the gamut from recording to live gear. It’s bad enough that I do/would actually care about tube brands, types, voltages (for everything), versions of certain pedals, etc. but I love this stuff in general and even if it’s not my favorite guitarist I find it fascinating. As an example, I’m bugged that Jerry Cantrell uses some combination of old tubes in his Fish that Bogner says sounds the best and I don’t know what it is. It’s all like a “how it’s made” episode for me in the end though.

Now for tone chasing, I would say yeah I do for an artist but once I figure it out I move on to something else for the most part. My basic tones would be an amalgamation of whatever I’ve learned along the way.

Funny story: I was brought in for a church gig with a guy who was a massive Joe Perry nut. Brought a real Klon, had the signature LP, and I think some small Marshall but it was a while back. He also brought his own wireless. He proceeded to just shred Aerosmith licks while we were rehearsing just walking out making sure he sounded awesome (which took most of the rehearsal time). Then we went to rehearse and he proceeded to just shred at every turnaround. I had assumed since he could play JP stuff that he should be able to pick up the parts for the all of 4 songs we were playing, no big deal. Not the case. That for me was basically my “don’t ever go full speed down one road forever”. I was glad this guy was playing though because the faces of everyone were priceless when it was go time. I’m pretty sure he half expected someone to show him some tiddies during the church service.
