What's the TIGHTEST pickup you can think of?

What speaker are you mic'ing on the Uberkab? Also, what's the name of the song you're playing?

I personally liked the Explorer with the hot-rodded Warcry the best, but to each his own.

I just tossed a mic to the upper left speaker (slightly to the right of it).

I like the Warcry, It's just, when I'm with the band, it compresses out and I lose some definition. I tried it twice and both times seemed mushy live.

I might see if I can squeeze just one more regular Warcry out of Wade (he said last time he was out of wire, and it is now a thing of the past).

And the name of the song is called "Tell Me What You See"...one off my Evil Epitome "The Light" album. (which by the way, was using an ESP Eclipse with EMG81 and MESA Recto and Stiletto).

That's the Celestion G12T-75, assuming your Uberkab is stock. :)

Funny, i didn't even think about which speaker i was using, so used to having regular all 4 speakers the same.
Yeah, probably was the 75.

normally would have mic'd the 30.

oh well.
still, it shows what I'm talking about nonetheless.

If you're still looking to swap out the pickup and have tried various others I would again suggest you take a look at the Lundgren M6. 6 string version of the custom pickup made for the boys in meshuggah. Tight? Bottom end? I have one loaded in an OLP baritone and its tight as a nun's cunt and can handle stupid low tuning. It is essentially a p90 on steroids I've heard, in humbucker form..

:m17:

I took painkillers out of my explorer pro because they were too tight! I replaced them with aldrich's and they are tight as hell to but no quite like the PK'S.
I cannot imagine pk's in a explorer not being tight enough!

Did you listen to the clips above that I posted?

The painkiller is the loosest of them all, in this guitar, it seems...also not the clearest at all. somewhat less clear and more compressed and muddy.
(in THIS Explorer guitar). It sounds fuller, but just, less tight (open bottom end), and looser than the other pickups.

It's tight, just not as tight as I want.

BK is not the be all end all of pickups...

have you experimented with the pickup height? try lowering the gain on your amp and boosting the front with a TS808.. I've had a painkiller and it was way too tight/harsh/upper-midrangey for me.. I eventually swapped it for a holydiver and am fine now.. i think the painkiller pickup might not be the the root of this problem.. maybe your explorer is not the end of all guitars :)

Yeah I didn't think the BK was either, that's why I sold them. However it was not a question of tightness for me they were just a little harsh which is often typical of ceramic pups.
Here is a clip of my explorer which I think was made before I removed the PK's. Sound quality blows because I used my POS cell phone but you get the general idea.

Interestingly enough, your clip sounds just like what I hear here.
Just not enough clarity perhaps.

Ok. So most likely I am just not a Painkiller fan, even though I wanted to like it.

I guess I just need to findva better combination of guitars for it. Maybe it would sound cool in a strat that is already brighter.

Yep, I tried it high, tried it low, and all over.
And yer right, the guitar is not the be all end all, but it's interesting how much faster I play on the explorers than the les pauls. It's weird.

Yeah, I find the V30 easier to record for some reason.

I still say try a Dimarzio Super 3 or D- Activator. I hear what you're talking about with respect to the low-end. The WarCry is a great midfocused pickup. I say Super 3 based on the EQ curve I think you're looking for.

Cheers,

Hey Rich, here is the link to my Pearly Gates from Lugo's pickup shoot out. Don't know if it will work for you but you are welcome to try it if interested. Worth a shot. I saw a couple of guys recommend it. Its low output, raw, bright.

Aloha, Rob.

Still have that MCP Black Iron you bought from me?

I am picking up someone's Full Shred for like $35 to try. figured why not.

I've never tried the Pearly Gates...always thought it would be a little too...weak for the sounds I like...

I should pick one up...

MCP Solution.

I guess you are digging it even after a good while. That says something. I should try another one of those.
 Actually bought another one for my Agile 3100. I have a Painkiller in one of my old Aria's but I think I liked the 500t in it better. I feel the Solution has more bite than the Painkiller. Alot tighter to me :dunno:
