Which amp was your most disappointing purchase?

Probably the Mesa Roadster... And I wanted to like it so bad.

But believe it or not... I have almost given up on the amp chasing. My Fender HRD and Brunetti 059 will do me just fine for now...

Diezel Einstein. For the price tag and what you get I felt it was a letdown.

I think at one point I bought a JCM900. WOW, what a piece of shit. Actually, calling that thing a piece of shit is an insult to the word shit.

I was never really fond of the 900 either/

Any head Marshall has made since they switched the product prefix from 'JMP' to 'JCM'

Marshall JMP-1. OD1 was ok. Everything else was ass.

Soldano Hot Rod 100+. The only '+' about it was that I sold it for more than I bought it for!

Mesa/Boogie Quad Preamp - Talk about 'weird mids'. WTF? Do they really think I have the time or patience for all of the damn switches, knobs and eq?! Give me a break - I'm a guitar player, not an air traffic controller.

I call BS! You LOVE switches and knobs. :hys:

Rivera K-Tre & CAE PT100- I could never get them to sound like the videos/recordings
and the 1st gen. 4 pre Splawn QR. Loved the 3 pre hated the 4, had to sell the 3 to get the 4 though :(

I have owned MANY amps as a dealer, and lots if trades. I have owned several that sucked, and did not work for me. The biggest letdowns were the Diezel Vh4, Vh4s, and Komet 60. They were not terrible, just.for.the.money were a huge letdown. The Diezels were mediocre sterile tones. Never great, just okay. I tried so hard.to like.them, just never jived, and flipped them. The Komet 60 was touted as a Trainwreck, and a Marshall killer. Was okay, and kind of a middle of the.road tone. My 72 Marshall 50 watter flat put slayed it. Like a vintage Marshall that was 3 times the price, and not as good. No way Ken Fischer signed off on that thing.

Peavey 5150.
I bought the combo when it firsst came out in the 90's and couldn't bond with it.
A few years later tried the head and didn't like it at all.
From all the internet love I actually tried it again....ugh.

I don't know how Ed came up with an amp like that after using a plexi for all those years.

I can understand 100% why you would not like that amp due to the years of listening to you and hearing your style of playing.

Your view though is one of the only views I take serious here though, I am thinking of several things.......

1 n00bs listened to someone they should not have listened to or...............

2 the amp owned their ass.

There LpFreak, here is some drama you are hoping for in this thread.

Thanks for adding....you're the best. ;)

This thread should be falling off the rails pretty quick now. EVH tone was mentioned.....

ANother dissapointment was the Mesa stiletto. It sounded great on paper but after recieving I soon found otherwise. Its not that it sounded terrible, just that it was mediocre at best and to me it did not sound like what they billed it as.

Never bought a amp without playing on it first. So never had this happen....

Anything Splawn!!! Biggest, costliest mistake I ever made..It also made me to never ,ever buy an amp based on video clips which is why I bought two half stacks a Promod 1/2 and a Quickrod 1/2. Sounded great on youtube!!

Since the Splawns cost half as much as the amps you routinely turn over within weeks of receiving them, could they really be the costliest mistakes you've ever made?

Yes!

when i was a teenager i loved dimebag so i ordered a Randall rg100 WHAT THE FUCK even my immature ears were shocked by that piece of shit.......so a few years later i got a warhead DEJA VU i fucking swear

I second the Mesa Stiletto... believe I had the earlier version. Sterile, fizzy, and harsh... ok cleans although. Also agree with Splawn Nitro.. very stiff, 'non personality' amp.. I don't mind the quickrod tho... My guitar player has one and it cuts like a knife live...and not in a bad way.. Cleans, master volume and solo volume are shit though...he has earlier model. I believe Scott has bettered the volume pots in newer models. And anything Genz Benz is only good for a coffee table or footrest.

Every Marshall I've ever played (unmodded). Horrible, fuzzy, unclear mess. The worst was of course the TSL 60 I made the stupid mistake of buying...say no more.

NB - I play progressive extreme metal and progressive rock...I get that if you want that 80s "roar" they're good amps, but they absolutely didn't work for me at all.

Diezel, on the other hand...

These threads are always interesting. My #1 amp has already been listed a few times.

I'm surprised no one has listed the Mojave Peacemaker. That and the Quick Rod are my two favorites and I can't tell you how many threads I have read where people scratch their heads after receiving those amps and sell them the next day.
I got my Peacemaker after having a few high gain amps, and I just didn't get it at first. You have to work the amp. The gain is there, but you can't hide behind it; if your chops suck, then guess, what your tone is gonna suck too. That being said, there were some things I changed with mine; I find the PM a little dark and stiff. A few small changes to the filtering, the V1b cathode cap and the output coupling caps makes that amp tonal nirvana! I think I'll send it back to Vic for the high gain mod, since I have a 68 Metro that does early VH dead to rights.

Oh, and an attenuator is a must! ;)

I had a Peavey Backstage Plus once, oh, wait that doesn't even qualify as an amp. Hmm, well, er, nevermind then.

Egnater Renegade. I know they're doing a commendable job trying to fill the gab in the lower end amp world (pricing) with versatile, quality, tone rich stuff, but other than the stellar clean channel, the gainy tones on my Renegade had zero mojo. Instead of inspiring me to play like my other amps do, it discouraged me, made me want to sell it pronto. And I'm not one of those guys, don't care about price, manufacture location, blah, blah...like the old saying, the proof is in the TASTE of the pudding, not the ingredients. Ironically, I kinda like the samples of the Tweaker 88 now, so Egnater WILL someday prolly get another shot to sit alongside my Splawn and 5150 III.

unHonorable mention, Peavey Renown 400....but hell, I was a kid, it was loud and that's all I cared about, lol.

Bogner Uberschall-I got one OK sound out if but that was about it. I sold it to Jason Wallis who posted the infamous "Oops, I dropped my Ubershcall!!" after UPS thrashed it.

After playing almost 10 different Bogners, I realized that it wasnt the amp as much as it was me; Bogners voicing and I just dont get along. There were 2 that I did enjoy playing, Bob Savages Super Shiva and Myron Stratis's Extacy classic when I was hanging with him Greece..

Peavey 5150II- Holy crap I hated that amp!!!! I sent it to Jerry P and when It came back, it was better but I still hated it. It wasnt his work though, I never liked the amp to begin with. Having played several others, the suck was consistent. Love the 5150, hate the 5150II..

Framus Cobra, Mesa Mark V (what a toneless pile of shit), Anything Krank, Twin Jet, JCM 900
