IMO there is a "Plexi" tone though which is brighter and has that great chime when you roll back the volume. When you add 5 gain stages to that it tends to loose the Plexi-ness.

Man you are on a roll! :D Again truth!

Yeah the term Plexi means a lot of different things as far as amp and tones go . I've heard people say that if you put a master volume on it , it's not a plexi anymore .

I had a Metropolous 1969 SLP clone for a number of years, plugged into an Auto-Transformer down to about 60volts and dimed it was all about the real Plexi sound. No pedals. My current favorite is the EVH 5150iii, a lot of gain, not so much Plexi.

In terms of it not being what the original design that was named a Plexi was.... it's not.

I have a MV on my Germino Lead 55 LV and it still sounds exactly like a Plexi

I was speaking in terms of what the original plexi's were designed like. I didn't say it would effect the sound.

Gained out True Plexi tones I would have to say would be the Metropolous Metro Plex. All the clips I have heard it really encompasses all things plexi in one amp from what I hear. I have not heard one in person maybe an owner can share their experiences with the amp. Just going on the OP statement.

Psychodave's old Cameron 50 watter posted above was one of Cameron's best sounding amps and some of his original CCV's but its a hot rodded Marshall tone really not plexi. BE100 in that category as well.

Fellow forum member Michael R/T has the best modded plexi tones ever imo. Modded them himself.

I owned a Metro 1969 SLP 'Plexi' for a number of years, used NOS Mullard XF2's, Telefunken and Tesla 12ax7's, plugged it into an auto-transformer around 90v, down to as low as 50-60v into 4x12's with Heritage Greenbacks... loved it, won't get much more real.
