Whooshing/crackling sound when I power up or down.

Hopefuly this will be the last thread on this amp. I've spent £80 on new valves for it, tried switching pre's around, nothing seems to get this amp to work, I've taken it to a tech 3 times with only temporary results. I've had enough.

I've just pushing in the tube sockets on the 6l6s with a jewelers screwdriver.Anything else I should do before chucking this amp on Ebay?

Symptoms at the moment are a whooshing sound when I power on or power down my amp, (hit standby) and a loss in volume of about 1/2. The whooshing sound I could put up with but I can't get it to sound good when it's lost half the volume.

The first time since replacing the valves, I turned it on, played for about 20 minutes then suddenly the volume returned to full, it sounded amazing for the 2 hours I was playing it but after that it's just been at half volume all the time. :(

That's tube related. I know you got new tubes, but sounds like a tube issue to me. Did you get new pres and power tubes? Or just pres?

Just power. I've switched around the pres with ones I knew worked about five times with no benefit.

I've also tested the pres by hitting them with the end of a pen to see if they were microphonic, nothing came up.

Get a new set of pres... I used to get that. I'd just retube the whole amp and it would go away. You can play around with tubes you know are fresh and see if you can isolate the one(s) are bad.

I dd that when I first got the amp and had problems, didn't fix it, I then took it to a tech who fixed a solder joint, that fixed it for a couple months before problems came up again.

Hmmm... Interesting. Maybe it's another cold solder joint?

Maybe. I talked to my dad, I'm gonna take it to the tech, get him to look it over, fix it then sell it. Maybe buy another 5150 II, maybe another amp completely,I know they're supposidly super reliable, but I'm not sure if I can trust them.

I dunno man... it sounds like a bad tube to me.
I would retube the amp could be a bad power tube or something.
But I'm no tech, just that I've had the same experiences and a re-tube fixed it.
