Wizard or SLO

Lucky for me I play at extreme levels. My drummer has a huge kit and bashes every single piece of it. Decisions decisions

I've owned 4 SLO's
& a couple of Wizard's.
Long story short....
For the money that you will spend
on a Wiz or SLO get the
best of both worlds but only
1000x better!!!
Mezzabarba MZERO Overdrive
Stopped all my GAS for Amps....for now.

I saw Dough E Raps ripping it up through one of those. I know nothing about them besides that.

Stick to the two at hand   the poster above you will be touting another in a few months or less as 1000 times better lmao

I'm definately sticking with the two I've discussed. No oddballs, if I didn't bond with it I would never be able to move it lol

Having owned a MTL, MCII, and SLO, out of all those i think the slo is more versatile imo. The Wizards are more raw in your face, but to me the slo has some magic in there, a great clean, great crunch, and amazing lead. You can go wrong with either one though!

So very true… I agree 100%... He will keep touting this amp to get everyone's interest up so he can sell it for more money…
Pathetic. I wouldn't buy a chicken sandwich from him

I A/B'd a new Wizard MCII and new Wizard MTL, for me, it was a very quick decision.
I took all 10 tubes that I wanted to use with me and tried them in each amplifier… Four Siemens EL34's and 6 NOS Mullard ECC83's - just so I knew I would be comparing apples with apples…
The MTL has noticeably more useable gain, also, the depth control is pure tone bliss, it adds so much body to the tone of the amplifier without ever getting 'muddy or tubby', if you know what I mean… this one control and the extra gain would have put me over the edge but then I experienced the saturation knob on the MTL, Wow! After that, it was no brainer for me,
And yes, every tone I could squeeze out of the MCII, I could replicate with the MTL. Then, after I got the amp and owned it for a few weeks, Gary reminded me of the tone shift push pull. This is a real cool control for the metal guys… It shifts the mids and Tightens the lead channel even more,
So, yes, both amps are world-class hard rocking amplifiers but I don't quite know how anyone could play both, one after the other, and not choose the MTL with more available gain, depth control and extremely useable features not found on MCII.
I thank Gary L who pointed me in the direction of the MTL... I drove almost 5 hours to try both amplifiers out and I'm glad I did, Gary was right!

Buying new? Wizard, hands down. 2 channels, 4 gain structures and boost circuit. Tube loop is 100x better than the SLO. Dollar for dollar, the new MCII or MTL delivers. Finding a used latest edition is going to be difficult. That said, if you want simplicity, two channels and don't care much about a loop, there's some good deals to be had on SLO's.

I would be buying used. Looking at 3-3500 ballpark. I've found several older wizards for 22-3000 and slo's for 2100-3000. So far only 3 updated mcii and 1 mtl for 2900-3500. I'd really like to pull the trigger on one by morning so I can get it shipped Friday or Saturday to ensure I can try it next week. I only have one show this weekend but then the band starts our summer season and ill be playing at least 2-4 times a week until October. Good problem to have but I just want a new flavor to go with my Splawn. Honestly everyone has been really great helping me especially glip and reza. I'm definately excited for whichever one I end up with. It's looking lik a wizard so far because its never hard to find a slo. THanks again guys

Cool. I keep my fingers crossed everything runs smooth and you will like the amp. Let us know how you like it...

Yo dogs Inca's post might have been a little OT but of all the cats on this forum who know their tone, he's definitely one of the leading contenders... So rather than dis him, thank him for throwing another option on the table - as admitted - he's run few a number of top amps, the subjects at hand included. So maybe he's got something to say.

Since I know Inca like I do, I'm going to check into these Mezzabarba amps out of sonic curiosity alone.

Reza knows his shit too.

Peace,
V.

Not sure if you've ever had a bogner ecstasy but I would throw that into the mix as it's very versatile and sounds killer. A current MCII will be very hard to find used. Most for sale don't have all the updates. A proper MCII will be more versatile than the SLO. The wizard sounds killer recorded and mic'd up. It has extended highs and lows which makes it seem scooped (to me) when you stand in front of it. The SLO has 2 killer midrange cutting channels w(shared eq) and will always work for live where you can turn it up. At home it's still good but you don't get the same punch at low volumes. Xtc is more versatile than both and great live and at home. I have a 100b so have not tried a 20th. I just sold my MCII for bills and still have an SLO

Just sold my 20th. The Wizard and he SLO just dominated it in every way.

I agree. I own a Bogner, but it is not in the same league. I'd rather have the SLO or Wizard than the Ecstasy.

To the OP: Also consider the Friedman Brown Eye or Dirty Shirley. Those amp kill for the tones he wants

I know the Wizards are primo amps, but if I had to choose between a Soldano SLO and any other amp, I doubt I'd choose anything else. The SLO has always been badass and never goes out of style. There is nothing like it. It's not just the overdrive channel either because the crunch channel can't be beat. You get an SLO and chances are you keep it for life. Get a Wizard and a few months later you might start asking about the Friedman JJ or something.

I've played a couple BE's and while they do sound great they seem way more compressed sounding than what I hear from Wizard clips and live shows using Wizards. Different amp IMO, though still in the Marshall vein. Dirty Shirley is more open and organic but still not a Wizard. My friend has one. Nice old school Marshall tone. But I think an an SLO tone is crushing, as is a Wizard. Decisions.....

Agreed. I own a BE and listening to the Wizard clips they are very different. The Wizard sounds way more direct and brutal than my BE. Very different. I don't say better/worse as that depends on what you are searching for.

Having said that, the 2016 BE version out now is said to have a switch that makes the BE less compressed, more direct etc. have only heard some great clips from rockinchippy / Alex and it sounds actually much more raw. Still not in the Wizard realm judging by clips...
