Wizards

I have had 2 Wizards that were good amps but as has been stated there are a lot of great amps out there. It makes me laugh when some people see them as the holy grail of amps . I've play quite a few amps that I thought were amazing,Friedman smallbox,Bogner XTC, Hiwatt,etc.. but in the end no matter what you play through you will sound like you.Plus personally I think Wizard is so over priced but hey its what the market will bare eh. Players have so many choices today..so enjoy...
The Wizard is an awesome amplifier, one of the very best, in my opinion. …but the Larry Dino (for me) is the ‘Holy Grail’…??

Wizard is definitely my holy grail. But if it isn't someone else's, doesn't bother me. I bet a larry would be, too. I am a gear whore. But of all I played, nothing comes close.

The Armored amps Sabot I bought was the single worst amp I ever owned. Flipped it within a couple days :aww: That amp should not even be mentioned in a Wizard thread.
Yeah I was mentioning them as an example of amps that everyone was buying up then dumping immediately after they got them. I know several people personally who got one and hated it.

Wizards are great amps.

I think they're for sale alot because people buy them, and then realize they cant really use them to their potential as a bedroom practice amp.
Do you think that this + the average price of amps being inflated a bit now are causing people to take advantage of the market?

We've seen quite a few here in the Classifieds. I'd love to try one myself but I know for a fact that my skills and personal situation with guitar'ing does not warrant $3K+

That's probably a piece of it, sure. All gear stuff is inflated right now though.

If I had unlimited money I would definitely have one in the stable, but I vastly prefer my Larry, and would prefer a Steavens too. I can certainly justify a wizard gig/skill wise, I just prefer different amps more.

They are unholy good, especially opened up though.

Absolutely agreed. Wizards are great amps though. Just don't fit my personal playing style as well as Larry's stuff, which is in its own stratosphere.

Regardless of the market there is not very many amps worth 3k IMO

I wouldn't care for many amps that were less than 3k. Price doesn't always make things better. And you can sound good out of some cheaper amps. But it isn't inflation and greed that pushes amps to a higher price always. It isn't snakeoil and elitism that causes us to pay the extra money for wizards and Larrys. There is something there that is very real and quantifiable. Aside from the fact that they are both made by mad men that love handwiring high quality amps with high quality parts, the sound that comes out often makes other amps seem like toys. So people that say no amp is worth that much is a little bit of a headscratcher for me.. Should they make a superior sounding amp with more expensive parts the same price as a pcb off the conveyer belt amp? You don't NEED a more expensive amp. But it sure is fun to have them.

Yeah, I’ve heard some pretty good clips of those. What’s the scoop?
This is something I am curious about also. I heard a ton of bad stuff about these, but i thought killertone had a lot of good tones coming out of it.

You know how amps are...individual preference. For me that amp was EXTREMELY gutless. Had no oomph, balls, push, punch, wallop what so ever. Just fell flat in that department. Hard to describe, but I also felt the voicing was just really wonky...don't know how else to put it. The loop sucked ass and the amp was very noisy with lots of feedback (bad feedback).

I felt so strongly that something had to be wrong with the amp that I called the builder and we trouble shot. He and I thought the bias was way off based on the meter readings I was getting, so he had me ship it back to him. He called once he got it on the bench and said the amp was 100% fine. I was reading it in mA when it was supposed to be read in mV which caused the discrepancy. He sent it back to me and it was exactly the same as when I first received it. Just a horrible tone, voicing, and feel IMHO.

To each is own.

That sucks. This is very similar to stories I heard from others. I almost pulled the trigger on that thing. The price was definitely right.
