WTF - am I going deaf?

That's the Eyehategod tone trick. Jimmy Bower runs his amps fairly bright actually, but rolls his tone knob to 0, that's how he gets his tone through his Ampeg ss-150 or Randall rg80es.

Well. What sucks is it is much worse when the guitar tone knob is all the way up. The only reason I though I was getting somewhere was because the tone was rolled all the way off and I didn't know. So now I have to go find the culprit.

Thanks all for the ideas
I thought everyone kept their tone knob rolled all the way up?? Well, except Jimmy bower.

Most do. I didn't realize it was all the way down is the problem. But now, when I put all the way up (or 9.5/10 - which is normal for me) it is really grating and harsh. So much to still check after so much time already put in.

It is a labor of love I suppose.

Thanks guys. I knew there was something up when I was doing the video but could not figure out what. I'm sitting there thinking 'man I've done everything I know to do'. Now I have some new stuff to check.

When I had a Quick Rod, I basically set all the EQ, including presence, from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock, and it sounded really good. I could bounce between the 3 gears and go from Neal Schon to Zakk Wylde sort of tones, drop the B+ and get that VH-ish squish. Its percussive and bright, but to get it to be harsh I would really have to push it weirdly.

Admittedly, I don't know much about the Rectoverb so I won't comment on it. But if you can, I'd like to hear a clip of your Splawn with the EQ set to noon to get a base of where to go from there.

My initial message might've seemed rude, but I would like to help you get to a happy place with your sound.

Also, can you provide links to sounds you are aiming in the direction of?

The tone was better to me on the 2nd clip, but it felt like it was lacking something. Almost like the pickup was too far from the strings and didn't have enough power behind it for the riff.

I'd like to hear it in a mix. It might be one of those tones that sound rough around the edges solo but fits perfectly in a mix.
To me, it kinda sounds like the OP is not picking hard.

i thought that too listening again now on my monitors, id still think though a cranking recto on the red channel unless the gain is basically off has to be hitting harder than that? where do you keep your gains at 311?
