Backstory….
I’d wanted an XTC since I’d learned what they were in college, then playing through one at the Seymour Duncan User Group Day in 05 cemented it. Fast forward and I tried a new one one in 08 and didn’t like it at all. Reading here and elsewhere I learned about the circuit changes and realized I needed an older one. So I bought a 1999 red tolex XTC about 7yrs ago off reverb. It came
loaded with Winged =C= 34s and TS803s.
Sounded great for a month, then it blew a plate resistor and lost a tube. I found the info on what to replace it with and rolled on. I went with EH 6CA7s then lost one of those. New fuse new 6CA7s, did it again about a year ago. That time I went with EH34s. February it happened again and I saw fireworks. So I opened it up and found some grid resistors that were toast. So I ordered the parts and fixed it.
I started getting pops again and when the tubes had a lightening storm I was DONE.
I contacted Jorge at Bogner and said I didn’t have anyone local and wanted to send it in. So it got there at the beginning of Feb. They said I had a diode that was out so they replaced that made sure all the resistors were good and put a new quad of tubes in and let it burn in for a while. After that they told me it was good to go. But since it was there…I decided I might as well go for broke.
I asked about an empty matching slant 4x12 and recovering the head to match. Jorge got with their
Tolex guy who said he’d do it since I was getting a 4x12. I also paid a little extra to go old school and got a checkerboard grill cloth to go with the metal
face!
Sooooo it shipped out Thursday and the estimate is that it will be here Tuesday! I’ve got 4 red paint Emi Private jacks ready to go, I thought about trying real greenbacks and knocking the volume down a little, but since I collected these I figured try them out first. I know most guys like V30s but I’ve yet to hear them and just fall in love them. I also thought about doing an Uberkab configuration but, one thing at a time.
Sooooo, pics coming soon, and let me know if you’ve tried an XTC with PJs.
