Backstory….

I’d wanted an XTC since I’d learned what they were in college, then playing through one at the Seymour Duncan User Group Day in 05 cemented it. Fast forward and I tried a new one one in 08 and didn’t like it at all. Reading here and elsewhere I learned about the circuit changes and realized I needed an older one. So I bought a 1999 red tolex XTC about 7yrs ago off reverb. It came
loaded with Winged =C= 34s and TS803s.

Sounded great for a month, then it blew a plate resistor and lost a tube. I found the info on what to replace it with and rolled on. I went with EH 6CA7s then lost one of those. New fuse new 6CA7s, did it again about a year ago. That time I went with EH34s. February it happened again and I saw fireworks. So I opened it up and found some grid resistors that were toast. So I ordered the parts and fixed it.

I started getting pops again and when the tubes had a lightening storm I was DONE.

I contacted Jorge at Bogner and said I didn’t have anyone local and wanted to send it in. So it got there at the beginning of Feb. They said I had a diode that was out so they replaced that made sure all the resistors were good and put a new quad of tubes in and let it burn in for a while. After that they told me it was good to go. But since it was there…I decided I might as well go for broke.

I asked about an empty matching slant 4x12 and recovering the head to match. Jorge got with their
Tolex guy who said he’d do it since I was getting a 4x12. I also paid a little extra to go old school and got a checkerboard grill cloth to go with the metal
face!

Sooooo it shipped out Thursday and the estimate is that it will be here Tuesday! I’ve got 4 red paint Emi Private jacks ready to go, I thought about trying real greenbacks and knocking the volume down a little, but since I collected these I figured try them out first. I know most guys like V30s but I’ve yet to hear them and just fall in love them. I also thought about doing an Uberkab configuration but, one thing at a time.

Sooooo, pics coming soon, and let me know if you’ve tried an XTC with PJs.

Luke

You are tenacious.

Congrats and looking forward to seeing/hearing this beast post NAD

HNXTCD

This is going to be epic! Very much looking forward to the pics!!

I went through the same thing, OP. I learned about them many years ago and was always curious, tried one out a few years later and discovered the hype was justified, heard a few again recently that showed just how versatile they are, and then just under a year ago I finally found a good one I could pick up and went for it.

It's sitting in my studio now. Man, what an amp.

Congrats dude.

When you live in Arkansas you have to learn to do a LOT of stuff yourself. I was just finally too frustrated to deal with it anymore
Arkansas?! You must immediately stand up, promptly exit the house, flee at top speed! Either go to the airport, get a one way ticket to ANYWHERE and go, go, go, or, just keep driving, DONT EVER LOOK BACK! Join the rest of us rigtalkers in humanity, friend, we got you man!

Just joking man, congrats on the killer Bogner cab and a functioning xtc. I love the 20th xtc, with 6l6 or el34, great amp.

I haven’t tried an XTC with PJ’s (or an XTC period) but I have used those speakers a lot and think they’re very under appreciated as a higher powered greenback alternative. I definitely like them better than the 65 watt Celestion creambacks.

I had an Avatar cab with them quite a while back now, kinda miss it because it recorded really well. At the time I mostly used a modded Laney AOR and a 6505+ and both sounded great through it. I also had one PJ in an oversized 1x12 I used with a Blackstar HT5 and it actually made it sound good for what it was.

If you like G12M-25’s but need more power handling I think you’ll like them. They handle bass better and cleaner and don’t fall apart as easily.

So the PJs didn't fall apart with the 6505? That's really saying something!

That is going to look great! Well done and congrats!

Post it up when it arrives!
