It's a keeper!

Just what I expected but more due the power scaling feature which is genius!! No more attenuators, done! It takes any OD pedals fabulously if you don't dig the boost, which i love actually. It growls like a beast and didnt take me long to dial in a slamming tone. essentially it feels just like a early 70's metal face 100w and 50w and really sings through a greenback cab. it captures everthing from Blackmore/Hendrix/Malmsteen and with a humbucker you CAN achieve from AC/DC to Van Halen/early 80's ...easily! The mid growl is just outstanding. I compared the boost to a DOD original grey and the YJM DOD. Its closer to the Black YJM DOD but it feels like its coming directly from the Power Tube stage, not like a pedal boosting the front end. hard to explain unless you play it. Almost like a treble booster vibe. the noise reduction feature is the best i've ever come across. I also experimented and through and echoplex faintly in the loop and straight through and my God does it warm things up and notes sustain for days!

Is it worth the price, every penny in my opinion!

I'll post some clips in the next week or so using different guitars and config. Santiago is the man!

Ciao!

Congrats, glad it's working for you!!!! I was just trying to figure out how to use my 1959 without an attenuator in another thread... sounds like I need to sell it and buy one of these lol!

Darren, whatever Marshall did research and engineering-wise, that got it nailed. It SOOO different than using an attenuator, however if you go ridiculously to low down to single digit watts, you are going have to do some eq'ing on the front panel. I can only imagine what this sounds like fulll tilt with no soaking....well i guess I'll find out this weekend in L.A at Nokia Club ; )

Im truly amazed that it took Marshall or any MFG this long to do something like this and I have to admit that they did it well!
I think the amp is a winner and just like any amp it will be right in the pocket for some and not so for others but that's always the nature of the beast! I'm one of those knuckleheads who loves preamp gain amps and power amp gain, so I already know how much I'm going to dig these. I think the key for me is sustain hahaha! If an amp has it, I Love it and it sounds like this sucker has plenty of sustain on tap(just like a pushed Plexi/boost GB cab setup)
I can't see anyone who loves the old Plexi/Marshall sound not loving this amp and the ability to turn the volume down via power scaling is AMAZING!!
When they announced this amp I have to admit that there were three guys who came to mind who I felt would love this amp and it was actually You , Barzini and Carl!! lol

Thats just it! By being able to turn the volume at 8 or even 10 for that matter, its this really cool power tube compression/sustain that ive never been able to get. sure I love MV amps and that cool preamp thing too, but this is the real deal..and mind you, i was using hs-3's which are stupid low output! the les paul with EVH 78 duncan, honestly, i just used the level control on the amp booost, no gain, turn everything to 10 and soaked it. BOOM! TC Flashback sound great in the loop. thats another thing with this power scaling thing. whatever effect you have in the loop, they dont get lost and mushy as it you had a PPIV mod or even a master volume amp with loop turn up all te way. it retains the same vibe as if your playing normal volume. BRILLIANT!

Cool. Hell I'm just glad you're gonna make us more clips! Would love to try one of these. Congrats and enjoy you're new amp.

Congrats, seems like a cool amp and i have a feeling i would really like it.

Holy shit the trinity of plexi high brows all love it, Barzini, Carl, and Ant! I am guessing quality control on this one was high as three amps went to three different parts of the country with the same results. The JVMs in the beginning were a bit left or right but it seems the same product is being delivered.

I am more than happy that Any thinnks the od is black 308ish as I like that pedal alot as a level boost alone.

Congrats Ant, real happy for you

I wondered how effective the new power scaling would turn out, sounds like it is a winner.
Hey Ant, speaking of treble boosters, I found a thread over on the Marshall forum where a guy found a kit that is supposed to be a copy of an old Rangemaster that you build yourself for next to nothing. Heard anything about these? He said it sounds fantastic with old plexi's
Congrats and happy NAD

 I don't like you very much right now.

looking forward to your clips with this bad boy!

i'll request 83 era yngwie w/ alcatrazz nightgames tones

and gary moore corridors of power

This sounds like the kind of thing I would dig too.

Hey Ralph....... you have these?

you've got to be a hell of a player to play that thing, it shows everything and hides nothing.

wonder if the odd sustain thing you mention can be shown in your playing on recording? sounds like the volume dropping is a win for sure.

the clips i have heard on youtube dont seem to do it justice at all. what makes it any better or worse than a regular SLP one off other than the built in boost and volume shelving?

good question. first off myself and a bunch of old schoolers here have been playing these typeamps for a while so we know whats expected. It's definitely NOT modern high gain spongy feel or MV feel, so yes you have to put some "dick" into it. But, if you have ever played in a studio or live a completely dimed Super lead or NMV without tearing paint off the walls, you'll understand that when it gets past 6 or 7 it's a whole new world in fatness and pure tube saturation which gives you that "hang time" and ultimate tone. The DOD or internal boost without a doubt gives that increased sustain, no question about it, but its clean. the neck position on a strat is unbelievable sounding with it. not all nasally, fizzy or distorted. u can drive with another pedal, like a ts-9 or your preference and get killer results too. but too me the internal keeps the original character and doesnt color other than a bit of treble which u can adjust on your eq controls. Its no different than plugging into a Super Lead or 1987x really or a real vinatge 71/72 metal face....but the modern features and the Yngwie boost make it a whole different animal...especially for performing live ( which i cant wait to try) i think is the key advanatge. Noise level control, power attenuation without compromising the character.

i'll do my best to make some good recordings, but honestlly i happen to think clips no matter what amp it is dont do justice to really being there.

in the meantime, this is a clumsy clip i did years ago over a yngwe backing with a 50w stock NMV 74' marshall on 10 with the grey DOD boost a hot plate through 4X12 greenbacks. kinda the same element. there are some of the same sustainy things on this clip. but dont use this too much as a reference for this amp because the grey DOD tends to get "flubby" and my filter caps were shot in this amp when recorded it. The 100w setting on the YJM is absolutely deadly~ and has tons of headroom and IMO sounds tighter and mid rangey than my 74.

Cheers!

Cool review Ant. Sounds like it was worth the wait. Gonna use it for the Scorps gig? I'd like to check one of these out someday.

Congrats!
