Yngwie critiquing other guitar players

Eh, so I read more of it. What it brings to mind is that there's looking at guitar playing from a purely technical point of view, and then there's looking at it from a 'what works for this song?' point of view.

When he listens to something like Pearl Jam's "Go" and "Even the Losers", and makes the comments he does, it tells me that he doesn't look from the latter view. So Beck isn't bending perfectly? Go hit it his track with pitch correction and tell us if you think the end result has the same vibe.

LMAO!!  The perfect setup.. A blindfold test in 94'.. Let's, let the perfectionist be himself.. :D I agree with some of his brutal honesty, even tough he has the charm of a jackass! That's Yngwie being Yngwie. He's the master of his own domain in the neo-classical shred most thought to pursue in the 80's. I did so myself. But it wasn't all I listened to. Yngwie is very melodic and does have feel. Does he have the feel Gary Moore had?..not in my persective. Is Yngwie willing to let down his perfection enough to understand Jeff Becks dynamic's? I don't think so.. Where would Metallica be today, if Yngwie was their lead guitarist? .. I think we all can answer that! Lars could be replaced easier then Kirk Hammet. I think I bought every album on the Shrapnal label Mike Varney put out after Steeler up into the 90's. Alot of great players were inspired by Yngwie. Alot became better rounded musicians then Yngwie, and some were even faster. Yngwie set the bar for them to pursue. Is Yngwie as perfect as he thinks he is...no. I've seen Yngwie many times over the years. It was always a joy when he had to many Heinkens's and played out of time. He has no accountability on himself, his ego doesn't allow that I think. He stopped the show in Cincinnati once..pointed fingers at the drummer..drummer said something he didn't like.. Yngwie took of his strat and threw it at the drummer! Lucky for the drummer, the cymbal stands broke the impact. Then there was the 10 minutes of comedy that followed. A drunk Yngwie chasing a sober drummer behind his amps, back stage, accross the stage etc. I wish Youtube was around then..lol. Yngwie is one of my favorite guitar players of all time. Yngwie has his bread and butter. Yngwie was inspired by Hendrix..he doesn't have his control or dynamics. He has his own. If I was a producer, I would pick Michael Landau to cover a Hendrix song in the studio over Yngwie. I would pick Chris Impellitari, George Bellas, or Joe Stump to cover a Yngwie song, if Yngwie wasn't available. But Chris is a cool guy.. I would have to weigh that..lol. I find inspiration in most music.. I'm sure there will be 6, 7, 8, and very soon 9 string players in the future that will inspire me. Whether it's EVH, Rhoads, Yngwie, Gary Moore, Alex Skolnick, Guthrie Govan, John Sykes, Django Reinhardt, Jimmy Page, Brent Mason, Richie Kotzen, Audley Freed, Paul Gilbert, Danny Gatton, Hendrix, Nuno, Neal Schon, Andy Wood, Steve Morse, Richie Blackmore, Steve Howe, John Norum, George Lynch, Joe Bonamassa, SRV, Steve Vai, Warren Haynes, Stanley Jordan, Carlos Montoya, Pete Thorn, and even the video's you guys put out there on Youtube and here on Rig-talk. It's all music. I appreciate it for what it is.. Randy Rhoads gave lessons before Ozzy and took lessons while on the road with Ozzy. I think he got it. Ego aside, everyone is a student with something to learn... Even the perfectionist Yngwie. ;)

For a guy who had a tone that was considered dated the day he introduced it & is one of the greatest one-trick-ponies ever, this guy sure has a high opinion of himself. "Maybe they heard my early demos"...common. Really guys, isn't it time that we stop giving praise to douche bags who don't deserve it. Yngwie being the biggest example of that. I can play 5000 notes a second...wow bud, it's just too bad you can play a single lick with any soul in it. But I can a billion notes a minute, great...can you please change the haggard over chest silk shirt & leather pants. Sheesh

Just another perfect example of how opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one and if it's not yours, you'll typically think it stinks.

Yngwie is one hell of a player. His schtick may be getting a touch tired, but the guy was a no-compromise practicing guitar player who obsessed over perfection at every level he was capable of entering. That said, his criticisms are lopsided and singleminded. Maybe the examples given, the musicians weren't seeking perfect pitch and tone, maybe they wanted some slop in their chops. This is what makes music human, right? I will state Yngwie's an iconic perfectionist player, but he too suffers from musical pigeon-holing. Music is personal, not performance related. Notes per beat and olympic scale distances on the fretboard is mildly intriguing, but hey, is it as impactful as that one note held mid-song by the old blind bluesman who just pours his soul into his craft?

I found the reviews laughable, but the whole Yngwie thing is a bit laughable - I mean, he's a funny guy when you really think about it.

I do admit Yngwie was an egotistical douchebag back then but he seems to mellowed out somewhat with age. To me there were 3 dudes that changed the guitar world and that was Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen. For those who say he's the same thing over and over, album to album I tend to agree but on the same token, I'm a two album guy Rising Force and Marching Out, Van Halen I and II, Blizzard and Diary etc. Everything else is just the same thing over and over that includes folks who have 20 albums ;) Satch, Vai, Vinnie Moore etc...after the first couple albums what is the point ;)

Like him or not, he's right on the money on 99% of these. Not too sure about Beck playing out of tune though...
As much as I hate sayin that I agree that he's right , I think he is. As far as the Beck song is concerned, there are notes taht are bent sharp or flat but it really doesn't matter to anyone except those people who are cursed with perfect pitch.

Yup, like I said before regarding perfect pitch, ignorance is bliss. But I'd still love to have it, as long as it came with an on/off switch.

No respect for your peers get you no respect from me. Being a great guitar player is one tiny facet of being a human being. Try acting like one, after your next doughnut.

  I agree x 10000000000000000000000000

Good for a chuckle but just typical Malmsteen....no different than Vinnie Moore reviewing " You don't Remember" off of trilogy and saying the song was weak but that the guitar player had a really cool classical thing going on and was "pretty good"..

I also got a laugh out of him saying Dimebag had some Chuck Berry thing going on and some horrible bends. That is what made him unique and he had chops for days.

He's approach is different. He's looking at the performances from a classical player's point of view. If you ask any of them they usually bash anything slightly out of key or tempo. But those little flats, sharps out of tune bends and tempo changes are the heart and soul of performances, and we call it mojo. On the other side did you ever seen a true classical player jammin'? Playing without sheet music? Any deviation from the sheet music is blasphemy for them.
Yngwie is boring me to tears if he plays his usual stuff, but if you have seen the G3 DVD's Little Wing performance, IMO it is his best performance recorded so far. He smokes Satch and Vai because he's playing from the heart with an amazing blues feel.
I bet he would comment it as his worst performance of all times. :D

To each his own but I personally never have seen why guys get off so much on Yngwie. When I saw him at G3 I was impressed for the first song...... after that I was so bored I went outside to drink a few cold ones and never felt like I missed a thing.

Thing is, Malmsteen is a killer blues player. I like it when he plays pentatonics more than i do when he plays harmonic minor these days :( You are right though.. the singer in my band also sings in a bach choir and he is such a loser when it comes to notes and perfect "pitch" all the soul and mojo you need to be a real singer is lost on him. As such we are doign a few more gigs and then seeyah! I';m just whoring myself out for about 200$ and then buying gear :)

There's perfect, then there's rock n roll! I know, for example, Chuck Berry didn't tune his guitar all the time, and I bet Yngwie would tear Chuck's solo's to bits. But Chuck didn't have to play perfectly to do what he did - and influence as many as he has.

Yngwie is a funny guy. Full of himself, and very smart. And I think he's right in this old interview - technically. Jeff Beck does bend and stretch the limits of playing in-tune, but that's HIS style.

You get the idea. Still a great read from almost 20 years ago! Damn, I'm old.

It read like it was from some jazz prick from TGP. Oh well, at least he can play it.

I really wish I knew how to post vids...
This is a good one!
Yngwie has very much chilled out since 1994. Especially after the birth of his daughter some time ago. He's a much humbler guy and always full of compliments these days. I'm sure raising a child would make anyone rethink how they act.
Yngwie really kills it on this selection.
Enjoy!

Mark

ps. wait til the end...Yngwie is tuning on stage and makes fun of himself saying: "It was in tune when I bought it.."

I do believe that all the akwardness that he is talking about Beck's bending, is intended; its the way Jeff plays. Im sure he has great ears.

I get the same feeling with Vai, a lot of out of tune bends or floyd rose weird sounds tricks he does, i believe he goes that way on purpose.

I honestly believe Yng was taking the piss at certain points there.. Claiming he'd never heard Beck's "lovers"? Nah, sorry man, not buyin it =)

I remember reading this when it came out first and laughin my ass off at him - he certainly knows how to play the media game the wiley fox!
He really is his own creation though and that G3 video is classic. He's the only one having fun from where I see it!

malmsteen is bad ass when it comes to shred but lars i dont think is all that good. What he said about Dime is blasphemy he is and will always be one of my favorite metal guitarist R.I.P Dime.

I don't like Malmsteen's playing...Period. There, I said it.

I agree with almost everything YM said, truth hurts.

Funny thing is, all the artists he so harshly criticized have been SO much more successful then him. He criticized Pearl Jam, Tom Petty, Metallica,....... who will be considered 3 of rocks greatest bands ever. No one outside of guitar forums even know who YJM is.

Show me how many albums and concert tickets Pearl Jam has sold. Then show me his. There is the joke. Im not even a PJ fan. I just think its ludicrous.

Funny read though ;)
