I play metal, so these might not be great for 'hard rock', but I don't really know...

1 - Engl Fireball 100
2 - Peavey 5150
3 - Ampeg VH140C
4 - Mesa Mark V
5 - Mesa Dual Rectifier

I haven't had the privilege to play most of the typical bad boys that get talked about on here, like the Ultra-Lead, Diezel, etc.

So far my favorites are....
Diezel VH4
Mark V/IV
Splawn Nitro
Bogner Uberschall Rev 2
EVH 5153

Still want to try the CCV, Natas, Cali mod. I've tried almost everything else.

In no particular order:

Mako Mak4
Framus Cobra
Diezel Herbert
VHT UL
Titan Custom

I can't believe only 2 people named the Herbert so far. That's the most punishing amp I've ever heard
I've never played one, but I'm sure if I had it'd be towards the top of my list. The VH4 was possibly my favorite amp I've ever played!

the VH4 is my favorite amp I have owned or heard or played.

Took a merry go round of amps to see this but again.......

"Hind sight is ALWAYS 20/20".......

;)

Unfortunately, I live in the middle of no where, and I haven't had the chance to play an Fortin, Friedman, or Camerons. I also lean more towards hard rock than metal.

1. Mesa Boogie MkIIC+
2. Splawn Quick Rod
3. Soldano SLO
4. Bogner XTC
5. Diezel Herbert or VHT Pitbull.

Unfortunately there are a few highly regarded amps for this genre that folks listed above that I haven't had a chance to play yet.

Of the amps I have played/own and in no particular order:

1. My 1994 XTC 101B (I've had it for 16 years and still love it though it has started to take a backseat to my PWE)
2. PWE Event Horizon 100 watt
3. Mesa Mark V (and that's after owning every iteration of the Mark series to come before it......I have one on order for my home rig. Mesa finally got channels 1 and 2 right IMO)
4. Bogner Uberschall TwinJet
5. Diezal VH4

I'd also add that when I was a touring guitarist in a Metallica-like metal cover band in the 80's (no spandex, tiger striped pants, scarves or big hair for me thankfully) my Marshall JMP MK2 with 1985 version 1 ProCo Rat pedal and Ibanez TS-808 into a Boss GE-7 with a moderate smiley face curve was all I needed to actually make a living........That and a Japanese Charvel with......OMG.......a Khaler Tremolo..... It's all I could afford :m9: (All items sourced from pawn shops ;)), but at the time seemed to sound pretty darn good in the mix.

My experience has led me to these:

DIEZEL HERBERT (6550 Power Tubes)
WIZARD METAL 100
BOGNER XTC 101B
VHT PITTBULL ULTRA LEAD
SOLDANO SLO

Honorable Mentions:
CUSTOM AUDIO OD 100SE+
BOGNER UBERSCHALL
ELMWOOD MODENA M90
ENGL STEVE MORSE

Diezel herbert
Diezel VH4
Wizard MC ( I think )
Bogner Extacy
Fryette Sig:x

Haven't played any cameron or fortin or a slo 100 hence why they're not on the list..

1) Mesa mark IV
2) Marshall 2553 Silver Jubilee
3) Orange Rockerverb 50
4) Engl Fireball
5) Laney VH100R

Baron K88
Peavey VTM 60 modded
JCM 800 modded
Plexi modded
ADA MP1 modded/mesa 2:90

Would like to eventually try some of Mark C's stuff

5150
Dual Recto
Mark III
Boosted JCM800
JVM

I haven't been able to play some of the higher dollar amps that other people here list.

1- Cameron CCV
2- Custom PT100
3- Diezel VH4
4- Bogner Uberschall
5- Mesa Dual Rectifier

4. Mesa Recto pre 500
5. Marshall JCM 800 w/6550 and a TS-9 or a Framus Cobra

Haven't played a Natas or a Cameron

Played a 5150 III at GC today and it is really easy to love that amp. Wish I could have played it loud.

yeah so did i.

just not an amplifier i could jive with. dont get me wrong they do sound great, are tight, focused, track awsome, and are way up there in the nice range but to me there is a blanket over the gain, different than a saturation type of thing going on - its more like a muffle. no matter the channel - channel 3 was the win channel for me - but channel 4 has that character in spades and with that kind of cash going on theres no way i could justify owning or recommending it. i just dont like it at all.

i think i know why it does it, and i could own one - but i would have to change about 10 resistors out and take some of the gain away or slightly change its voicing to get rid of it.

ill send you a PM of what i thought
