Still one of the best amps out there...

the herbert in the shop sounded great with the mesa os but not the vh4. Had a diezel cab with k100's which worked great with it. Kinda funny. I never went wild volume wise at home so I never had any issues with it.

That is interesting, because the Herbert has an even bigger low end footprint than the VH4! I never tried a Herbie with my old OS cab....I honestly preferred my old traditional recto cab, so she is long gone.

I do have a FL Diezel 4x12 and that sounds killer!

Yeah, the Oversized Mesa cabs do not play well with the VH4. I remember having to keep the depth at zero and the bass at like, 9 o'clock just to keep the bass in check.

My old 99 Traditional sized Recto cab was another story: the VH4 sounded amazing through that; huge, tight and punchy!

Ya, the VH4 is a modern classic for sure and I miss having one. I have a Herbert mk3 and VHX, but for Diezel tones, I spend 95% of the time using the VHX's VH4 settings.
Does the VHX really cop all the tones it claims to???

Did anybody notice that the vh4 hated mesa os4x12’s with v30’s? Mine did….woof city. The Herbert sounded killer with that cab though. My vh4 was great with my Randall xl with 2 v30’s and a legend 15” and surprisingly a gflex 2x12….
I observed the opposite. Adam Jones concurs.

Now that I have had it for more than a year, I feel I can give a pretty good answer.

In that time, I have been able to compare it to my Herbert mk3 as well as a newer VH4, and old script VH4 and a Hagen.

I would say it can get ~90% when set up for the specific models. Now, as guitar players, that final 5 to 10 percent can be a deal breaker....or close enough.

For someone who wants to capture the vibe of the different Diezels in a super versatile amp package....VHX is a great choice. If you absolutely need and love exactly what a VH4 or Herbert does and don't need all the extras, I would say grab the real amp.

I was inspired to plug my VH4 in after catching up on this thread. What a lot of fun….and for an amp with a distinctive voice, it really is pretty versatile. For speakers, mine seems to get on great with the Greenback H55….but as that’s the only speaker I use and I’ve spent time dialling it in, YMMV. Would like to try a V30 loaded Diezel cab with it

I love my Herberts with Marshall and FL Diezel . Shit same for vhs . But my herbet through my Randall Warhesd cab was my main tone for years

I've been thinking vh4 high gain sounds like fuzz pedal engaged. I wanna try vh4. But, herbert was pretty huge let down.

Give one a try, not a fuzz pedaesque amp at all in my opion. It's also not similar at all to the Herbert having owned both.
