In the end what 162 allowed me to do...... and luck thanks to my Dads advice to use the number since there are 162 games in a season.....is to synthesize the math to something easy and practical......
Something simple and elegant.......
[(Players WAR average over 5 seasons)/(Projected WAR for next season)]
It allowed me to see and understand that only players with a 1.5 or higher WAR for 60% or more out of 5 seasons make a difference and are worth a damn.....
Using this you only filter the players that offer that and have a projection higher than 1.5 WAR 60% of the time over 5 seasons or this can also help you see that a projection may be wrong and you can give a player a second consideration.
Once you plug in the numbers any player below .7 is not consistent or overvalued in some cases, any player above .8 is decent and a player that will perform shy of projections but still decent, .9 and close to 1 means a player is set to meet projections or come close to them and 1 or above 1 is undervalued in some cases or a player that is set to meet projections or out pace them most likely....... TLDR: Pretty much filtering and assigning an F, D, C, B, A or A+ grade to the value of a player.
