Went to the DMV to get my Real ID today, 12 weeks after finding an available appointment online. They reject my state issued birth certificate because it has a piece of scotch tape on it. I try to reason with the guy, explaining it was 56 years old, NOPE. He went into a lecture about how I need to take better care of my stuff and how his is older and pristine. I explained I had found it in my parents safety deposit box, he told me I should then tell them to be more careful, I said “I’m gonna dig them up and have a stern talking to them then!”

Call the town I was born in, come on over we will issue you a new one. GREAT. Drive 25 miles, do all the paperwork, “sorry your file is incomplete, can’t help you, need to go state office in Trenton” (85 miles away).

Drive to Trenton, two hours. Stand on a 12 person long line for 1.5 hours. Fill out the same form again, show my current non Real ID drivers license, you know the one the DMV issued me, they provide me a copy of my birth certificate, which I can now use to show the DMV to issue a Real ID. 😵‍💫

So to review, DL is not enough to get a Real ID, need BC as well, but the DL is good enough to get the BC, which in turn is needed for the Real ID. 🥴

Must be your state dude. My birth certificate is 56 years old and has scotch tape on it and it was good enough. It literally took no longer than just renewing my drivers license.

NJ doesn't strike me as the state with the friendliest gov officials especially when you see those property tax rates.

If you were an illegal you would have been in and out in 15 minutes.

They drove me crazy. Had to go back 3x

I got one. Not a big deal unless you wait til the last minute.

I got my Real ID when they first became available - even though I was not due for renewal - because I was traveling quite a bit for a particular work project. Brought every single doc the website listed and things went relatively well. Then it was time for 'renewal' and the DMV said I needed to bring everything again - even though I obviously had to have all of those docs to get the Real ID in the first place(!) No worries - I know where I had put those docs. I show up and the guy at the counter says: 'Oh, you don't need to bring all of those docs again once you already have Real ID.'

State and Local Govt really is an example of 'right hand not know what left hand do.'

I’m not sure about there, but here the DMV is subcontracted out.

They wonder why everyone hates them. Fucking Nazis. Fuck them. I hope everyone that works or has ever worked for the DMV gets bone cancer and dies in front of their children in miserable pain.
