Went to the DMV to get my Real ID today, 12 weeks after finding an available appointment online. They reject my state issued birth certificate because it has a piece of scotch tape on it. I try to reason with the guy, explaining it was 56 years old, NOPE. He went into a lecture about how I need to take better care of my stuff and how his is older and pristine. I explained I had found it in my parents safety deposit box, he told me I should then tell them to be more careful, I said “I’m gonna dig them up and have a stern talking to them then!”
Call the town I was born in, come on over we will issue you a new one. GREAT. Drive 25 miles, do all the paperwork, “sorry your file is incomplete, can’t help you, need to go state office in Trenton” (85 miles away).
Drive to Trenton, two hours. Stand on a 12 person long line for 1.5 hours. Fill out the same form again, show my current non Real ID drivers license, you know the one the DMV issued me, they provide me a copy of my birth certificate, which I can now use to show the DMV to issue a Real ID.
So to review, DL is not enough to get a Real ID, need BC as well, but the DL is good enough to get the BC, which in turn is needed for the Real ID.
