Dime Tone.............4 Amps....which one did it better?

I just want to know where we’re getting it was used every album. Vinnie said on VDOP, not Terry. That certainly doesn’t say every single album this was dimes tone. I’ve seen a butt load of videos with Randall’s and eqs nailing dime tones. I’ve owned a hell razor, MTL, and modern classic…. I don’t see it. Like at all.

So you don't think the Wizard MTL let alone a 1990's Wizards sounds like this Randall Century? I don't hear it either but since you have played a Wizard MTL and Hell razor I'm interested in how you think they compare contrast.

listen to white zombies first album, that is randall century too and sounds more like the amp without a bunch of boosts and doublers and everything else, it still has that unique randall thing going on though

A wizard doesn’t sound anything like a solid state amp. More articulate, more punchy. Also just generally speaking the frequency range is pretty damn different.

Sure, MAYBE on VDOP (coming from Vinnie again, and not terry mind you) he could’ve had a wizard 10dbs under his 4 different tracks of Randall. I think dimes tone is mostly Randall and the shitty speakers he used lol.

Side note it’s crazy people don’t mention Rex’s bass tone and how big a part of it is to the punch and grind of Pantera. Rex was a pioneer IMO to coming out with more aggressive bass tones.

I read in an old magazine that la sexercisto was all JCM 800 with a DigiTech RP floor unit while Astro Creep was Randall century 200s and a Marshall VS 8100.

i thought the 800 blew up during recording or something?? i know he had a triple rec in his rack during astro creep, ive seen he used 8100s in there too

That's part of the Dime tone. That said, the amp is set to sound like that. I personally do not set my RG100 to sound like this and I will say, its an incredible sounding and feeling amp and I would put it up against any tube amp. For the $300 I spent on it years and years ago, it was well worth it. Too bad it has ugly carpet. :ROFLMAO:
It is indeed an incredible sounding and feeling amp. Once the master is at about 3 it really starts cooking and sounds very tube like. It really needs a boost though to get the most out of it. I miss my old rg100es a lot and want to get another but they are hard to come by here and these 40 year old amps are usually plagued with issues... Most of them it's noise issues like loud idle humming.

Where is the Wizard?
It should be there . It’s the secret sauce . Vinnies exact words was there was always a tube amp in each album to get the razor sharp highs . That’s why I kept my Wizard mtl2 even though I got a Hell Razor . My mtl2 is my pantera amp

If you have the time brother Techdeth you could be the first on YT to post a Wizard doing Dime/Pantera tones clip so we can compare them side by side.

We would all love to finally hear how the Wizards compare/contrast with the Randall RG100ES and Century 200's. :2thumbsup:

I suspect by itself the Wizard will not have all the crunch/grind S/S qualities that the old school Randall's have and attribute to Dimes tone.

When you run you MTL2 for your Pantera tones do you run EQ's and noisegates and L500Xl's as Dime did into his Randalls?

Here's a PRS Archon doing Dime....it's a good tone but it doesn't sound or respond like the Randalls' do.

So you weren't bullshitting, cool. Would you sell one to me sometime?

BTW the speaker thing happened, believe it or not.

I don't think so man, those highs are sizzling big time like only a Randall can. I think Vinnie fried his brain with too many black tooth grins to have any kinda accurate memory of the recording of those albums. I'll take Dimes word at the time of album release over anything Vinnie said decades later.

Vinnies exact words were “In the studio he also needed to have a tube amp in there to get that crystal-clear distortion. Dime went through several tube amps at the time. He had a Wizard amp that I know he used on VDOP, and I THINK HE MIGHT HAVE used it on CFH.”

I don’t know how this infers that Dime used a Wizard on every Pantera album. He only states he used it on VDOP. And then at the end a maybe from Vinnie on CFH.

If you want to sound like Dime, Randall and multiple eqs is the way.

Also, in the studio blending amps isn’t like a 5050 deal. A blend is like 10dbs underneath (where it honestly isn’t even really audible till you take it away) typically to just fill out bottom end. Similar deal can be achieved by adding other mics that are more bass heavy way underneath as commonly seen with a 57, and 421.

This is a fact .Even Eick messages me the exact specs Dime used . This is old news . It’s crazy people still don’t believe it

tone in the video is really cool, but not like Dime's. Its waaay too polished.
