Karnivore vs V30

Yeah, less nasal and fizzy than the V30, and fatter on the low end.

Reminds me of the sound I get because I normally run 2 cabs, one with Celestions, and one with Eminence. These kind of sound like that mix on their own.

I like Redbacks quite a bit, and will likely keep one cab with the V30/RB combo just for that variety, but my other 2 cabs are moving over to Karnivores.

Can you do a redback and karnivore comparison?

The Karnivore sounds like it has the lows from my G12T75s, the mids from my Texas Heats and the highs from my CL80s.

I've been thinking about this with the Karnivores. As I expand my music area and get room for more cabs I want to build a couple of my own variations of the Friedman Butterslax cab (212/15). I'm thinking Karnivores mixed with Legend 1518's would sound bad ass.

I've tried quite a few different brands of speakers over the years and I love what a Celestion Greenback does for my setup. I play hard rock/metal and the Greenback has a nice balance of bite & low-end.

The Karnivore certainly has peaked my interest. Like they say though, if it ain't broke don't fix it. If I stop hemorrhaging money, maybe I'll give these a go.

Another Karnivore vs V30, from @killertone

The V30 has a small dustcap whereas the Karnivore has a larger one. Since close micing is hugely based on the distance from mic to the edge or center of the dustcap, the single mic position in the video is going to favor one speaker over the other. Since the Karnivore's dustcap is bigger/wider, the mic position will be much closer to dead on in the middle relative to the V30. Different sizes (and materials, but that's another topic) of the dustcap disperse the highs in radically different ways.

Of course, this is a simplified comparison. I probably don't need to write anything about the impact of microphone position on recording. But the basic character of the speaker is IMHO captured well enough.

IMO not bad, but nothing that special. What I don't like, is that sandy overtone, easily to hear at 4:15

That sandy overtone is classic 5150 II not being cranked up enough. Literally every 5150 I’ve ever owned or played sounds that way until well above gen Z volume levels.

In classic eminence attitude it showcases exactly how an amp sounds good or bad. I actually liked that it shows this downside to a 5150 - it’s supposed to. If it didn’t, the speaker EQ would be guilty of imposing too much control over what’s driving it and everything sounding the same that runs through the karnivore.

I just looked at pics of one some dude on TGP posted and looks almost same as V30 in his pic. Are there some with different dust caps?

🤷‍♂️

Looking at my Karnivores and V30s, the dust caps are the same size.
FWIW to anyone who’s interested, I know Kristian in a video said he sent eminence his 03 v30s as a starting point for his speaker. Tweaks were made from there.

His first prototypes in the IR pack sounded like every other eminence speaker. Final result sounds killer though… I’m real impressed and think it’s the best thing eminence has made. (I say this having only used the IR, don’t have the actual deal yet).

I think it's just an extended top-end. Nothing that can't be filtered out in a recording. I'll save final judgement until I get mine and hear in person.
