I've been wondering about this myself, thinking about picking up a different boost for my '71 Marshall but I don't want to get something that is too honky or cuts too much bass.
Don’t do it!
I have a Metalhead modded 800 that I absolutely love so I took the chance when these were released. I figured “How different could it sound?”. It doesn’t sound anything like the amp and now I have a paperweight with tubes. The concept is really cool, it’s a shame it...
I had a Hot Mod in my old 2204 for a while. It added tons of gain but (as mentioned above) was noisy. I lost some of the range on the gain knob too, it went from zero into high gain territory pretty quick.
I ended up going back to using a boost. It sounded better to my ears (I prefer a...
I gigged with this setup for over 10 years playing death metal:
Ampeg SS140C head (built in stereo chorus and reverb) $250
Ampeg SS412ES cab with G12T-75s- $250
Boss NS-2- $40

I picked up 3 Shuguang 12AX7Bs on eBay. I had one fail instantly but the other 2 sounded awesome, they were cheap enough that it was worth taking the risk.
I love my ‘72 SG Custom, it always blows people’s minds when they see it being used in a death metal band.
I originally searched it out because late 60’s/early 70’s Gibsons have a narrower nut width that I like. I was missing one of the original Tarback pickups so I threw a...
  I had an older Nitro that I always thought had "weird mids". Didn't sound at all like the clips of other Splawns I heard before I bought it.
