2013 Amp Recording Fest, Saturday December 7th. Raleigh, NC

Spent a couple of hours today experimenting with mic placement etc... Someone had suggested using the bottom 2 speakers on the cabs instead of the top, I tried it and really liked it. Also.....check this out we were taping the with gaffers tape around the capsule of the mics so we could have our sweet spot marked and we realized that was slightly muffling the sound, actually more then slightly, a bunch. So we took the tape off and replaced it with very thin pieces of tape and it sounds way better. I never would have imagined that mattering but it did. Anyway, I think the sounds on the Recto/V30 and Avatar/GB are much better now. Here's a clip of each with my '71 Marshall Super Tremolo in Hairy Brown Eye mode with my Les Paul.

P.S. I just realized I wanted to back off the Presence and Treble a touch, but I had a client skype in as I was getting ready to record and got distracted and forgot. So the tracks are a tad bitey. The amp was set a bit bright cause the foam huts were a tad darker then my old tent. And my initial settings were set to my darker mic placement.

I spent a few hours today experimenting with a few things and have refined the sound some. I also phased both cabinets perfectly. Meaning all 4 mice are dead on, sample accurate in phase. I retracked the Avatar/GB cab and Recto/V30 using my Marshall HBE. I also tracked both cabs plugged into my Ceriatone Plexi set to 4 ohms. So the Both cabs/Plexi track is both cabs and all 4 mice at unity gain, no specific blend, just straight up the pipe. I also got 4 more pieces of foam today to set up a 3rd guitar hut for combos and/or alternate cabs. The Recto and Avatar are gonna stay like this for the most part.

Here's a vid from 2nd set up day. Mic placement, dialing in and phase. Clips at end of video.

James, sounds like you have plenty of amps, but if you want, I can bring my Landry LS100 G3 and my BFG modded Metropolous Marshall.

Would be cool if someone shows up with a VHT/Fryette and a Bogner ECSTASY. Maybe A mesa Mk IV and Engl

Can anyone bring a lowly DSL 100/ older JCM2000 to see how it fares? Interested in seeing if it can hang with the big guns (even though i suspect it definitely will)

We had a couple of Peavy 6505's at the BBQ that ABSOLUTELY hung with everything there...I am pretty sure one was modded, but even so it really had be scratching my head being you can pick them up for 600-700 bucks for a + pretty much all day long on Ebay and prolly even less on CL....

The other 6505 belongs to Matt (glpg80).

He modded it and it hung with the rest pretty easily. The stock 6505 sounded killer too and I've never been a fan of it. As bill said above, the price cannot be beat. I was shocked but most surprisingly, I loved James' stock JMP. I wanted to take that thing home.

I've got my eyes open for a 6505+ HEAD (not combo version .. which can be had for 400$ all day long it seems)

Dude I have been recording my stock 6505+ the past month or so. Fantastic head.

I may not be here that weekend after all, but I'd be willing to drop the amps off....

You can drop them off at my house anytime you like Mike!!! :D I'll make sure they get there and get back to MY place...LOL (i am missing having a pounding amp since I left mine at James house...been noodling on a Vox Night Train and a Cyber-twin since October...LOLOL)

Hey James...I am going to grab some feet for the SLO too, we can slap them on the thing so its not such a PITA to set the thing down....

Update:

Ola Englund hit me up and said the tracks and DIs are done and I will have them next week. Bruce Bouillet just messaged me and said he's working on a shred DI this weekend and will have it next week too. It's all coming together. Very exciting. Working on dialing everything in on my end. This will rock!
