5150 ii or 5150 iii 50 watt

Considering the specific old school 5150 tastes, I'm curious what rbasaria would think about the Invective. You know, assuming they ever start shipping them out

I think I am the only person on the planet that doesn't like the EVH stuff. I hear good recordings of it but literally never enjoy playing one. My buddy is going to bring his 50 watt EL34 version over so I can give that a go... My vote is for the Peavey unless you need all the other bells/whistles.

Not the only one..........I honestly do not like them at all. Matter of fact, I bought the 50 watt three times to see if maybe I wasn't doing something right or I just got a defective one. I will say I have heard some great clips. However, when I play one it just doesn't jump out of the speakers. It is compressed, very sterile (generic) sounding, and nasal. I had a regular 6505 at the same time (the recent made in China version). The 6505 destroyed the EVH 50 in every way. I compared both amps through cabs with EVH Greenbacks, Reissue Greenbacks, Heritage 75hz H30's, and Vintage 30's.

5150 III red channel is the 5150 series lead channel. Very little difference and I'll bet what most say is a difference is speaker choice. 5150 III 50 watt vs any 5150 with the same cab and you'll hear they are the same.
I've had the amps next to each other. I disagree.

Having owned 7 Peavey 5150s over the years, a 5153 50 watt, and a 5153 stealth, I still prefer the Peaveys. I would 5150II/6505+.

Me too. Owned 5150, 6505, 6505+, and a 6534+. Also owned a 5150 III 50 watt, twice. The Peaveys have more personality and grind. To my ears, it's unmistakable.

Agreed here. With an OD boost and some clever guitar volume rolling, you can hit a huge variety of material. The Blue is awesome!

Agreed. I find it stiff, flat, and sterile sounding. Almost generic. That said, better preamp tubes are a huge step up. I find an all JJ preamp section really holds the amp back.

This ^^^. I went with ND's tube recommendation and it really woke the amp up. Sounds waaaaay better now. Thanks again, dude.

You guys say sterile I say consistent eventually I'll buy another rectifier for a less compressed sound but I'm hoping the 5150 iii will suit my needs for a while

What's the lead channel difference? 120 watts vs 50? Listen to the Judgement Day intro on VH's Carnal Knowledgs. My PV sounds exactly like that. Exactly! 5150 III 50 watt red has that sound too. The extra gain stage is there. The fizz is there. Maybe the PV barks a little more and the 5150 III is a little smoother. The fundamental sound is the same. That 5150 fizzy buzz where I hear the extra gain stage is all there. And that's what 5150 haters bitch about. Heck it annoyed me for a while. I almost switched to 900s. I just angled my cab very slightly and I could notice it as much. Now I'm glad I kept the 5150s. I have two half stacks. Love them! I'd play any gig right now and bring a PV and slay!

I vote for PV. Proven to be indestructible and one of the best high gain tones ever. But, if a better clean is important to you the EVH is no slouch either.

I don't think sterile at all. Maybe more modern, not AS raw in the mids; but I prefer it to the originals.
I've owned a couple block letters and a 5150ii, and as soon as I got it, took my 50 watt to my buds house who has two 6505+'s in his head case, and at the same settings( everything at 5), his was a little rawer, and mine more smooth.
That's what knobs are for, a little bump in the mids and the gain low and it screams. I play deathmetal and boost blue with gain on noon, and red at 9:00 (2 out of 10). I could see it not being the best rock amp, but with the gain/tone, and the loop/midi/switching options, its perfect for metal.
Now this and a boosted single recto in stereo..........

Consistently sterile. Yes. I'd take a used 5150II on the cheap any day. But, I don't use cleans, or care about them.

Now, to really throw a wrench in it - This is the stupidest deal you can get on a brand new amp that simply SLAYS. I've owned it 4 times, and TWICE, I sent the EVH 50 watt packing and kept the Randall. I paid as cheap as $479 for one, brand new. They are built solid, and they are harmonically richer, and more raw sounding than the EVH, any day of the week. I love these heads.

Word. Have been debating getting one of those to run stereo with my Evh.

HA.. If you run them side by side, you'll be scratching your head why they're nearly half the price. China-made? Yes. But the Fortin grind is there - trust me. You'll be listing the EVH in the Classifieds after buying one!

I hear what you are saying but I like cleans and having to EQs for both but I think it's all speakers
