5150 ii or 5150 iii 50 watt

I think the Rectos aggression and thickness would mix well with the 5153's smoothness and tightness.

Well the 5150 iii lasted one session with a drummer and just doesn't have it oh well at least I tried guess it's back to rectos

I bought the 5150 3 el34 50 watt. It is nice but doesn't hold up in a band situation unless mixed with another amp. The neck pickup position always sounded weird too. Not warm and kind of phasey or hollow? The gain structure is great but not enough oomph compared to other 50 watters I have tried.

Considering the specific old school 5150 tastes, I'm curious what rbasaria would think about the Invective. You know, assuming they ever start shipping them out

That's an amp I am definitely curious about, but not enough to pay that price tag. I will try one if I see one in GC one day.

The big thing for me that killed the 5153 50 watt was we were tracking drums in November 2016 at my buddy's studio. I was laying down scratch guitar tracks as we were tracking the drums, and the sound was...OK, I guess. Just a decent metal tone. My other guitar player was borrowing my 5150 212 combo at the time, so I called him and had him bring it by. My buddy that runs the studio was asking what the differences were, and I told him to just wait til we plug it in and he will hear it immediately. Plugged in the Peavey, and he just said...Oh yeah, fuck that other amp. And I have to agree...in comparison to the PV, in terms of straight up aggressive metal tone, the EVH does not even come close.

I agree as well. I would ask anyone to try the 6534+ vs. the 5150 EL34 as well. No contest, (and the 6534+ is probably my favorite of the PV bunch).

Just being the devils advocate I guess; but I must have got a good one or one that had been tube rolled already. Mine sounds just killer, and I've had it in a room with a couple older 5150's. Different strokes and all, but as a long time blockletter, and recto guy, I prefer this little 50watt.

The 5150 II is my least favorite of the entire line. I’ve owned a block letter and two sig 5150s. I currently own the 5150 III 100 Watt Head. If you just want killer distortion the original is killer. The III is killer as well and has a much better clean channel. I never use the blue channel. So I can’t really comment on it. Lol.

Did you get the Randall yet?
