CNA spoke to former US Vice-President Al Gore on recent climate concerns, the situation in the Himalayas, powerful petro-states and fossil fuel companies, and the communication of falsehoods that climate change is a hoax.

In a wide-ranging interview in Singapore on Monday (Sep 7), Mr Gore exclaimed that people should stop treating the sky as an “open sewer” and that the recent Nepal-Tibet disaster is a “taste” of the catastrophic consequences if we do not solve the climate crisis in time. While there are prominent examples of transitions to cleaner energy that are beginning to take hold, the global transition is moving slowly, and one of the main factors Mr Gore says, is to do with the “incredible political power” of the fossil fuel companies combined with petro-states.

Most people with the ability to critically think can recognize the impact humans have on the environment, but understand it's not to the extreme degree climate alarmist like to portray. Yes, we should do what we can to mitigate impacts; both on a societal and individual level. At the same time carbon taxes and forcing underdeveloped technology really isn't going to do much to make anything better.

The alarmist don't help things towards inviting rational discussions either. Yelling about we're all gonna be dead in 10 years and trying to force useless environmental laws just puts people off on actually wanting to engage in productive conversations. It pushes people to distrust and creates a hard divide between sides; neither wanting to listen to the other.

I think a very small slice of people hoard a disproportionate amount of resources critical to basic human life who then turn around and fly private jets from their mansions to conventions and meetings where they blame commoners for destroying the environment. What is your solution?

I don't personally have one. China tried limiting births, it didn't work. Africa seems resistant to attempts to encourage condom use. People are wired to reproduce.

But, I think a solution will present itself in some kind of mass extinction either by a large number of natural disasters (Nepal but thousand of times over) or a pandemic like the Black Death in the middle ages.

You're absolutely correct in describing the "western" world. Everyone here, depending on their wealth, has a larger environmental footprint.

But countries like India and China make up for smaller per capita pollution by sheer population numbers.
