I had a trailer hitch installed on my SUV. I went to You Haul and rented the smallest trailer they had. There was a group of guys waiting around looking for work, and I needed a couple to lift some sofas and other furniture. I held up my hand with two fingers for two guys. They SPRINTED across the parking lot. Followed me home, loaded up my trailer - CAREFULLY - and fast.

I paid cash and they were happy and I was happy. The point of the story? They were brown. Not a single white or black face in the crowd.

I have the highest respect for all the (mostly Mexican) workers I have dealt with. Honest, polite, hard working, friendly and eager. Good people.

I paid them what the job was worth in my estimation. For 30 minutes hard work, I gave each guy $40 and gave the guy driving the car $10 for gas.

I got my trailer loaded up for under $100 and they got paid $80/hr. Plus a small 'benefit' if you really want to get into the weeds. That's what the job was worth to me.

Respect brother. I picked up a literal mountain of straws off the beach in a dozen years of working there on and off. Half a five gallon bucket full just about every morning, never mind the endless cigarette butts, spent condoms, beer cans/bottles and hair extensions.
