Karl uses stock DSL 100s. I talked to him at NAMM when he came by the Amptweaker booth and he told me straight up.

Peter from Vader has the best live death metal tone I have ever heard. Unfuckingreal. So heavy but tight and articulate. The pinnacle, IMO.

For me, Bloodthirst is CC's best recorded tone but the Rutan albums sound great, too.

Decapitated's Nihility is an unreal recorded DM tone. Absolutely sick. Doesn't hurt that Peter from Vader produced that album.

Do you know what they were using on nihility jason?

As far as I know it is Rectos with EMG 81s.

I think this tune in particular shows off how badass Vogg's tone is:

And of course this one, such sick and simple riffs. Totally crushing. Makes you want to punt puppies.

I dig the tone on bloodthirst, don't get me wrong. I just really like the Evisceration Plague I guess.

I guess we should take a Poll.....Best guitar tone on a Death Metal album? What are your guys picks? I am sure this will be highly subjective, because tone is so subjective, as well as Death metal. GO! :D :D

Nile overall. They are also totally amazing live, very tight considering the complexity of the music.
Older Morbid Angel for original tone though. That weird sludgy mid-range type thing is just weird but it works.

a good newer band tone would be Carnifex. those kids arent bad.

Their best tone begins and ends with 'The Bleeding' for me. I know that was recorded with Crates....but I saw that tour and Rob Barret had just started using Rectos. It was one of the most god-like tones I have ever heard live.

Rob also used that same set-up when he toured with Malevolent Creation....and that also killed it.

Frankly, I am not a fan of the newer down tuned Corpse stuff now. It just doesn't grind like 'The Bleeding' does (Or 'Tomb...' or 'Butchered...')

Well said. Early CC is where its at. So many bands had shit recordings. No one knew how to record this crazy shit. Lookin fwd to the remastered Death catalog.

Imo....carcas' heartwork borders on not being death metal.

I'd agree on the Carcass assessment, particularly given their previous releases....it was a huge departure from those albums. That said, I think 'Heartwork' is a great album....and was even better live.

^^^^^^i never seen carcass live....other than the vhs video i have. I will be spinning symphonies of sickness tonite as i drive thru oklahoma.

I def like the old school shit way better than the new shit. As i said earlier, recording techniques have come along ways since the days of everything in the genre being recorded at Morrisound studios.

I think their tone is perfect for what they do.......see metalzone does serve a purpose other than sounding like an ass cannon.they sound awsome live too

I thought their tone was sick live as well. Although, the metalzone IS used as a clean boost it seems, and it is Keeley modded I believe as well...so that does help :D
they use alot of the distortion from the pedal....not just for boost effect

Saw Carcass on the Heartwork tour and they just killed it, tone was massive. Disincarnate had a decent recorded tone, but live it was just insane.

The Bleeding was my favorite Cannibal Corpse guitar tone!

One of my all time favorite death tones is Illdisposed - Submit.

I like their tone. It's not a typical Recto sound to me. Really cool though.

That's what I like about it. I cannot stand that "Recto-Rumble" nu-metal sound, or the typical lame "Punky Fart" radio rock sound (think Bowling for Soup 1985 or anything by Blink-182...).

I just picked up the Global Evisceration DVD. Extremely well made tour documentary and concert footage.

^^i just bought it too. Gonna give it spin in a few minutes. I have monolith of death and love cannibalism on vhs and they dont sound good at all.

Got rhru the dvd. One word...Friggin Awesome!i started listen to CC with TOTM. Then The Bleeding came out and i was floored. Of course, barnes gets booted which really sucked and was quite a shock at that time. I thought corpsegrinder sounded great on Vile. But i thought he eas awful on GOS. Imo the best tune on theat is "from skin to liquid"

Great return with Bloodthirst. I kinda left them behind then and got totally into instrumental guitar music. Never paid any mind to the releases after that. Well this thread and that dvd just got me re-hooked. Just bougjt everything else from amazon.

I usually go for grindcore and crusty punk stuff but damn Pat o'Brien is a monster player. I see he is filling in for Hanneman on some European Slayer,Rob Zombie,Exodus tour.

I love old cannibal corpse tone. Its just brutal and huge sounding. So much tasty saturation! haha

My friends recorded one of their CDs with Mr. Rutan (Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal), which is who Cannibal has been recording with and got a great tone also!

I believe the amp was a modded JCM800 with an OD in front.
