Same reason people say "an hour" rather than "a hour." If it sounds like a vowel, you use "an."

makes me want an sandwich

It's not "A slow" it's "an S. L. O."

This ^.... It's an S.L.O.

If you can't say it right, you shouldn't even be able to play one! Really, SLOW ?!! Geesh!

I swear I have never heard anyone say it like S.L.O. ever. I do not go around talking about them all the time but the first time I saw this amp was about 10 years ago. I have definitely talked to quite a few people that either had one, wanted one or was getting one and they always pronounced it like Slow.

That is how I was introduced to the amp. Maybe it is the different generation thing like some have said or we are just not in the know.

el oh el

I do wonder, to be a stat geek, what the independent variable is that determines the pronunciation (dependent variable). Is it age? Geography? Music style?

I'd go with age...I remember when Mike got started (and then RB shortly after) and I learned what to call it* not from reading but by talking to the reps or the GM at my favorite dealer (where all the local pros hung out). But that was late 80s. I'm 49.

*I remember hearing Bogner called "Bonn-yay" a la French...when said GM told us "He's a German guy; it's BOG-nur."

If you say "SLOW," you're slow.

It is S.L.O. As in, ESS-EL-OH. Hell... I think there's a video of Mike Soldano actually mentioning that people say SLOW sometimes and it's wrong. Somewhere on YT (which stands for YouTube, not YEET).

I say, "S.L.O." and "PAF" (PAAHF)

Bonn-Yay

That is Epic and I must change my sig now. Too funny.

Probably age, I'm 35 me and all my friends call it a SLO. I've never owned one and never have done any in depth research so obviously I'm wrong but to me it's still a Slo.

-WTF!!!-

-30 posts on grammah NAZIS!!!

-surely the appocolips is near-

How about Les Paul being pronounced "Lay Paul" as if it were French for "the Pauls". Yes I've heard that one, from more than one person who own those guitars. Then I've told them "It's Les as in Lester". They're argue, and I'd say "no, I mean literally because it's a signature guitar design for Lester Polsfuss aka Les Paul". Derp.

Haven't we had this conversation several times already? Lol. L.O.L.

Probably. I missed it, my apologies and now I know but I do like how this thread turned to the French Connection.

"The Pauls"

Someone call Mike Soldano, we need to get to the bottom of this.

For the record I always thought the whole 'an SLO' thing was pretty redic too.

It is not an Uper Lead Overdrive?

I just think it boils down to what is easier to say and how people apply nicknames and such.

Think about it.

SLO (slow) - sounds cooler than S. L . O.

Just like:

Plexi
Recto
5153
Herbie
Uber
Mrak
Strat
Tele
Paul
Jag
Ibby
Snax
Maps
V30
etc

Right? :dunno:

What else?

Based on the fact that it's written in all caps, and knowing what the letters "S," "L," and "O" stand for, I never even considered anyone would call it a "slow." This is all new to me. But it does explain the OP's question

Who the F says SLOW? P.A.F. Is the same thing....calling it a "PAF" or even worse describing a pickup as being "PAF-EY" (which I've heard before) is straight up lame :aww: :aww: :aww:
