Way darker once they are broken in.

If you like GB's you also may like 65's or CL80's....similar voiced but clearer.
Not a fan of V30's with a Marshall. I'm a greenback/H30 lover, but lately I've been really loving the Mesa MC90. It's a really nice higher wattage alternative. It has a clear, smooth greenback flavor but with thicker mids and balls and big lows.

and there you go - that's why there's so much gear and different stuff works for different people :) If I had a cab loaded with V30's to check out I would spend some time with it, but since I got Greenbacks in my other cab and I really like them, I'll just stick with that. Too expensive for me to just go experimenting.

True!

I bought a Marshall Greenback cab a few years ago loaded with UK Greenies and absolutely hated it with my 50 watt plexi. It was so bright it was unuseable for me. I have a Metro build with all NOS Mustards, A&B CC resistors, NOS Siemens EL34s, and real Mullard Blackburn pres that sounds as damn close to an actual plexi as I have ever heard...didn't work with the GBs to me though. :aww:

so the V30's were darker than the Greenbacks?

Way darker. My V30s are 12 years old and extremely broken in, the top end in them is very sweet.

My Vintage 30's are also way darker than any of my other speakers. And i own Greenbacks, G12H30's, G12T-75s and G12-65's. None of them sound anywhere near as smooth as the V30s.

I have run my oldies (68 and 73) with a Bogner Cube with V30 and like how that sounds, it's different than greenbacks but it sounds good.

so how was the tone different?

I would say smoother with a tighter, bigger low end, yes even from the 1x12 compaired to my 4x12 with old greens.
The thing is, playing greenbacks at reasonable levels, they are kinda bright untill you turn WAY up and then they seem to sound fatter. V30s to me are the other way around, they sound fatter at low levels but brighter when played loud.

I often run my JMP Bass clean(ish) with pedals, with GBs I prefer it to have just a bit of an edge, a little crunch when you hit it with a humbucker. With a V30, I prefer to keep the amp totally clean.

I agree in that they can sound pretty smooth. For me its the mid hump that a little disagreeable. This is fine if Im using my Marshall, bolstering the highs and scooping a little, not a problem.

With the old Mesa Boogie though, its all a little congested...

Me too, i'm a BIG fan of V30's and don't understand all the hate

I have a Fortin custom handbuilt Cali Plexi circuit, and I love it to death with V30s.

People who don't like V30s don't know how to dial amps in to suit them, or refuse to do so.

Flame me all you want for saying it, because I couldn't care less. They are the industry standard speaker and loaded in so many cabinets for a very good reason. They are also the speaker of choice of nearly every single recording engineer I know for a reason. They were also probably used to record one of [insert name here]'s favorite guitar tones, without them even knowing about it.

The best three v30 loaded cabinets around IN MY OPINION are the Mesa Traditional Cabinet, Mesa Rectifier Cabinet, and Engl Pro Cabinet. Don't bash them 'till you try them. I know plenty of people on this board who will tell you they're V30 haters who have heard the cabinets I have at my place and really liked them. It's a lot about the enclosure and what amp you hook up to it.

i attribute a lot of the Mesa cabs being good, to the fact that the speakers are 8ohm.

Yeah thats it....we don't know how to dial in an amp.

There is definitely a high mid frequency I don't like in the V30, whether it's broken it or not it's still there.
But in the right cab it could sound better or with the right amp. I like the Carvin Legacy with a V30 because it's a dark amp that needs that extra zip in the high mids to cut through, but that's about the only time I've preferred a V30 with an amp. Lots of Mesa's seem dark to me so I could see a V30 working out there.
Most Marshall's already have enough high mids in their voicing, add to that a V30 and it's ice pick city...unless the cab it's in smooths it out somewhat.

lol this topic always comes up.
i have my modded tsl60 and i have to admit - after only having ever played it through V30's - im really starting to want to hear it through some other kind of speaker.
sometimes i'll turn it on, and there is just this heavy inherent mid range type of thing that just won't go away lol. i don't know if it's the speakers or the amp, but like i said i've really been jonzing lately to play it through some other speakers.

maybe i just need a different amp once in awhile? lol

...make up your mind lol :D

What I've done is put two V30's in the bottom of my 1960A and two ET65's in the top.
You still get that midrange and V30ish tone, just with less overbearing mids.

Broken in V30s sound great. I do seem to like V30's with higher gain amps and most plexi tones I've heard that i liked sound best on broken in Greenbacks. I've drifted away from H30's, too bright for me. So i tend to think of V30's for metal, and Greenbacks for Marshally amps. Of course there's no rules here, that's just i tend to think.

Good point. I agree the V30 is all over modern recordings and people seem to dig it.
I tend to not want a tone like the common metal tone I hear these days on CDs. I like the old Marshall/Greenback flavor much more.

It's all just preference.

I prefer 65s with mine, but I do have a Marshall cab with V30's that also sounds great- just a different, darker flavor.

love the v30s with my jmp super bass, i actually sold some heritage 30s and uk greenbacks once i got the v30s
