As a lot of you guys know I am a huge fan of Friedman 1x12 closed back cabinets with the Celestion G12M-65 creamback, I have 3 of them, but I have 4 amps.

I currently have:

Soldano SLO-30
Soldano Astro 20
Victory MKX
Friedman JEL-20

The Friedman cabs work well with all of them, especially well with the Soldano Astro 20 and Friedman JEL-20.
I figured I would try a new cabinet so I went with the Soldano Open back 1x12 with the redback speaker, the Closed back comes with a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker which I am not a huge fan of for my style of playing.

The Open Back with the redback speaker should tame some mids which might work well with my Victory MKX also.

It should arrive Wednesday and I hope to be able to report back soon.

I still keep going back and forth about selling my Friedman JEL-20, for some reason it doesn't inspire me to play as much as the other amps?

My favorite amps to play are the Soldano Astro 20 and the Victory MKX, but the Soldano SLO-30 sounds so great.

I personally don't keep anything I don't use especially if I have better gear. It is good that you found amps you like better than the JEL-20.

Would be interesting to hear the redback. With those amps I'd probably go 75W creamback instead but maybe that's the wrong instinct.

I generally don't like high gain amps with open back cabs. A TL806 with an EVM12L Black Label is my go to 1x12, although it is a little on the dark side.

I am the same way, it definitely is last in my rotation, but then sometimes I love it?
Same with my guitars....
The last in my rotation is always my Strats, but sometimes I love that Strat tone?

If I could only have one amp and guitar, it would be a Gibson Les Paul (probably my R9) and the Soldano Astro 20.

Same hear, I am not a fan of open back cabinets, but I listened to a YouTube video of a Soldano SLO-30 combo which is open back with the Redback speaker and it sounded great.

My only other different option was the Soldano closed back which has a Vintage 30 and I was pretty sure I did not want that speaker.

If I don't like it I can always excahnge it for another Friedman 1x12 closed back that I know I like.

Howie.
I could definitely recommend a Celestion Alnico Cream in a semi open-backed 1x12 cabinet.
Go with 16ohm if possible, to utilise all of the amp’s output transformer - if they have 16ohm capability.
The Cream is designed to sound wonderful from 1W, right up to full output.
Compared to a Creamback, it’s like going indoors from your car stereo, and putting the hi-fi on.

Good move on dumping the JEL20. I found it to be an absolute POS. Impossible to get a decent tone with Strat guitars and single coil pu's. I could not deal with the excessive brightness, and muddy bass, neither of which could be dialed out.

I never heard of that one, I will check in to it, thanks

I think it is a nice amp, I just don't like channel 1.
I don't think it had muddy bass or too much brightness, but for some reason it doesn't inspire me to play.
Maybe I am not a Plexi guy which channel 1 is based on.
I like Channel two, but I need a lower gain change sometimes.

Not sure if I am going to move it yet, but if the right offer or trade comes up you never know.

I really wish my son-in-law would have taken the JEL-20, but he want the Victory Sheriff 25.
I miss the Sheriff.

The Soldano cab arrived a day early.
It is a large 1x12, much larger than my Friedman 1x12s.
It sounds great with my Soldano SLO-30.
It sounds good with my Victory MKX, but maybe a little brighter than I would like, same with my JEL-20.
I decided to keep using the Friedman 1x12s with my Victory MKX and Friedman JEL-20, but if I didn;t have them the Soldano would do juat fine.
I will admit, the Soldano makes the Friedman sound almost boxy in comparison, but the Friedman smooths out the MKX and JEL-20.
You can't go wrong with either cabinet.
