heh...another cool thing Jason set up: he set some delays that react to pitch so that you can play a super crunchy chord progression down in say F# and its basicaly dry, then move up to the 14th fret high E for some pentatonic wankery and those notes are verbed and delayed...how do it know ?

Vinegar is also a good substitute! :D

The Axe-Fx is a smoking, ground breaking piece of gear, in my opinion of course...

Um..yeah

Jason - that was a sweet little trick..... heh, the wife is working late again, you need to bring that biotch back over for some more pizza / beer / AxeFx meltdown   (or not :aww: )

My XTC isn't going anywhere. But then again I have an Axe-FX standard too :)

I love the AxeFX, but I still love my tube amps. I have ran the Axe with a Randall RT 2/50 tube poweramp, and I own a QSC HPR122i powered cab for FRFR stuff.

I just like options. Last gig I played, rocked a Bogner XTC 1/2 stack and a Boss DD-20 in the loop. That was it - super stripped down, and it killed.

Said it before and will say it again...the Axe and amps can happily coexist. That said I'm selling everything that I haven't used the last 6 month...means all my stomp boxes except the Reeza and Keeler Push, and the rack with the Axe/VHT set-up, and my old Marshall and Fender stuff and the M13 stays. Everything else is gone. Given I have no problem accessing any THD stuff, but all the high gainers are out.

Yup, I never understand the either or guys, unless the budget can only cover a great tube amp or the fractal. If I had to make that choice, I'd pick the Fractal because it has so much to play with.

Pete

Tube guys A/Bin'g it with Bogners and liking it

Dweezil Zappa using it to make an Eruption preset that smokes everything before it

Ed Degenaro selling amps he's had for years after the 7.x code release

What more is there to say about this thing?

Oh yeah, the bass tones sound great too. I'm about ready to upgrade to the Ultra myself.

Axe-FX Ultra + 7.04 firmware = The Shit.

If you are a tone freak who digs tweaking and needs a large variety of killer tones, get one.

Steve

P.S. - Dweezil Zappa's latest Eruption preset he posted at Axechange sounds EXACTLY like the VH I album with my old Kramer guitar w/Mojave pickup recorded direct.... Very nice use of the MBC to tweak it to the album and the plexi cab impulses make a HUGE difference... I also dig how he used the pitch shifter to downtune 1/2 step. You can use a guitar tuned standard with this presest and simply kick in the pitch shifter to get to E flat... nice... If you have an Ultra and enjoy VH I tone, I highly recommend it... I'm gonna do a VH I clip with it, but not Eruption... too many of those already...

Steve

I just uploaded Zappa's VH preset........and his Hendrix presets are all equally as good.....damn!

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah...but you all are secretly just justifying the crazy amount of money you spent on a MODELER

How the hell can a computer sound as good as tubes? ;)

Cliff should make one that has 6.3v to run the heaters on two very prominently mounted 12ax7 tubes for the next generation Axe-Fx. Don't hook them up to anything, just have em with heater voltage so they LOOK like they are doing something. Much like several cheaper tube microphone preamps and the Marshall JMP1 preamp :)

Well, PART II of the AxeFx experiment took place last night....Yakima Jason came back over for more beer and fun. I'm still basically blown away by this. I'm getting one. Period.

The bigger issue now the is the realization that I probably don't want to have a knee jerk reaction and sell off amps I love to do it...I've got a plan, we'll see if I can make it work. I've got a much better understanding of the ways this thing can work.

Bottom line is this thing is killer, I'm going to own one.

Dude, it took me 6 month of gigging it until my "all high gainers must go" sell off started.

Two guys thinking or flat out dumping XTCs for the axefx!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Done fucking deal, I needs me a standard

Haha, you've come a long way from the "Glorified POD" opinion you used to have. :)

I'm more than a little proud of you. :D

This thread lead me down the path...

*damn you all*

Phase one was yesterday: Picked up the Boss foot controller with the 2 expression pedals (the way I intend to use the Axe, the Boss will fill just fine) (getting it used and saving about 125 bucks didnt suck either)

Phase two was two hours ago: Picked up the QSC from a local store. I got a pretty decent price from online and asked them to match it. They did with no questions asked. I did pay the sales tax, but with the 100 dollar rebate, and just wanting to keep my friends store in business, I'll gladly donate the sales tax.

Phase three is next week when I get paid... Ultra on the way.

Phase four is a month from now when I am certain I can use the Ultra the way I imagine it in my head after all of this research...

Phase five?

Massive gear purge, pay off everything in full, then throw 2k (or more) in the bank.

I cant find a reason NOT to do this.

Lighter, cheaper, more flexible, constantly upgradable...

the only downside? MAYBE someone could tell it really isnt Amp X... MAYBE.

but even if thats the case, so what? When you go buy a TV at the store and you see them all lined up, you can clearly see the differences and make your decision... but once you get it home, you cant tell if your TV is good/better/bestest of them all anyway. Whats the big deal?

BTW....I saw that you picked up some FRFR powered monitors.....digging them?

I bought a second Standard...and Simul Satellite

yeah, its sort of hard not to...I think that after my initial blown away reaction subsided a bit today, I was able to step back for a second and reassess this. I had an extended conversation with a long time user of the AxeFx to clear up some lingering questions about it, more to just to confirm ideas about it and the various options to run it. Bottom line the applications appear endless.

* Great results have been had using the AxeFx only into a powered PA speaker - use the cabinet simulation and amp simulation and you end up hearing what a killer recorded guitar tone is or what the audience will hear via a miced cab. This can be done at very low volumes.
* Apparently its not critical to have a tube power amp running it - high quality SS will do just fine, weigh half as much. The interaction maybe a bit off, the quality of sound will still be incredible. I want to check this for myself....
* Run the amp through an effects loop, use the power amp of your head.
* No loop ? run it direct in the front end and set the tone stack flat. Case in point - the Dr. Z Maz38 patch into the front end of my Aiken Intruder set clean was jaw dropping - un freaking real. The options to tweak how it sounds are endless if you choose to go there.

Apperently there's a powered cabinet coming from Atomic that is specific to the AxeFx that has a couple of 6L6's in it. About the size of an oversized 1x12

I've now spent appx 6 hours playing through this thing in the comfort of my own home, with my own guitars, through my own amps and cabs and at gig volume and whisper / kids are asleep volumes. I've got a good basic understanding of how the unit works and think that I've had a pretty unique opportunity of extended playing with a guy who knows how to run it very well. This may not work for everybody but I think it will be an unreal addition to my setup, provide a ton of fun and stop the revolving door of amps.
