AxeFx insanity....

Just posted this @ TGP, figured I'd cross post it here...
I guess I'll spell out my 2 cents worth a story here...
Got the black box last April, started gigging it in August. Mind you I had 20 amps, and a rack with Eventide and TC gear, and all the pedals in a looper.

I started with it slowly replacing EVERYTHING in the rack other than power amps/mixer. Started selling off stuff I never thought I'd sell. Then I started seriously messing with the amp sims. And ended up making it my main gig rig last Summer, given that was through a VHT 2-50-2 power amp a THD cab with Heritage 65s or one with Heritage Golds in it. I've done over 100 shows with it. Since then I've done 3 shows with a "regular" set-up. One with an amp that was fun but not my thng for gigs, 2 with my old Marshalls with a M13 in front. The guys in my money gig told me last week to not bring anything but the Axe rack to the gigs.

Also, I just finished my new CD less is seldom more which will be out in like 2 weeks. And 90% of all my guitars were done with the Axe stright to hard disk.

I use either something gained out into a power amp, like a high gain head, or a non master head dimed into a load into a power amp. Or loud amps clean with stompboxes.
Well, the Axe takes care of the majority of this, what it doesn't do is my small Class A stuff, like the UniValve. Which I load down and slave through the Axe in parallel with the internal amp sims when I want it.
I finally broke down realizing that it does for me what I need and I sold last week alone a dozen amps.

And to take this a step further, my iso cabs I use in my studio are likely gonna be goners here as well.

Bottom line, I have no issue with folks not digging that box, all I know is that after about a year I still feel in the honey moon phase.

Presets...scrolled through them found some interesting ones but in the end the only ones worth anything to me are the ones I dialed for my needs.

Ed -

Are you still using the VHT power amp? What are your thoughts on SS power amps given the current quality of the amp sims ? (asked you this on TGP too ;))

Thanks ~
Steve E

I may have stated on several clips that I have heard better results with PODs from others, Tonelabs as well, but again I am now hearing outstanding clips that sound awesome. That would be the user issue I stated earlier.

I wont say I never said it, just dont think I did.

Maybe we should discuss that coffee table headshell over at TGP you are selling :hys: :hys: :worship:

Yeah I did make fun of certain players in the beginning, how could you not laugh at Scott's dated sig when he adopted the axe??    You have to admit the last 5-6 months the quality of clips have gone way up. If someone was saying that the axe destroyed everything else and then a clip was posted that just plain sucked how could you not have some fun :D

I do have a different view of it though, cannot deny that.

Who's laughing now sunshine? Bwhhaahahaha!

Hate to say I told you so... but damn man, I told you so.

That is pretty sick that guys are threatening harm over a processor, I know Scott is an easy target but to threaten him bodily harm?????

I'm not hard to find; but 'easy' target'?

Hmmm, not.

Just sayin'.

I get fools talking smack to me all the time. Comes with the territory. Trust me, I don't sweat any of it. Some of the folks that play those cards might be serious; the one time I posted on the forum that he'd not say that crap to my face, other folks went bananas on other forums and even TGP running with that one. No sweat really.

If it gets down to it, I can handle myself. No BS. :gethim: :D

Well well Mr Peterson has traveled over to the other side of the tracks

That re-amp thread at your place was the true start of the axefx, there was no denying that guys were posting POD and Tonelab clips that were flat out better. OF course it was operator error on the part of the axe guys, the others were good tweakers with good ears and it showed.

Now with the latest firmwear and guys like Degenaro, John C., and even Dweezil Zappa for crying out loud.........some great stuff has been coming out.

AS I was outed as, yep I have back-pedaled and now yup I will have an axe-fx at some point to live with the other gear.

AS for easy target come on Scott, you did have some classic one liners over there :D

I have heard this thing a handful of times and seriously thinking of making the plunge. That being said, I have yet to sit in a room and hear a SIM produced by the AXE FX, match that of the original.

I am confident it can pull off a gig well and record great, but when you have a real tube amp against the patch I have yet to walk away and say, "Damn I need to sell all my amps".

That said, I am going to get one for the effects and look into building my patches to replicate the Mesa's I have.

Ed, have you been able to get a patch to match your MESA TOV?

Like I said, they get in the ball park but it depends how picky you want to be, and furthermore, when I have heard the side by side comparisons, I always preferred the original, but appreciated the effects.

There was a guy in a U2 tribute band and he had the axe sounding EXACTLY like the edge, actually better. I know quality is in there and I am determined to get it to match my MESA gear!

You've had a few one-liners yourself Mr. Jams. :D

I'm here lurking a lot, I like to read and talk about gear. I don't post much here (or a lot of places) because (some) guys get very territorial when they know I'm around 'their' turf. I'm not lurking looking for crap about me (or anything else) but it is funny to read some of the stuff said. On the Net, there is no 'privacy' really. Byproduct of using my own name and sticking to that. Always fun. ;)

In the end, though we spend most of our time on the Net Musician boards talking gear; it's really not about the gear. It's about music and finding the tools to best help communicate the music.

Peace.

Well...I dig plugging into a head as much as thee next guy. But no set-up ever had the consistent, repeatable tone like my rack.
As for the TOV, let me answer like this...
I sound the same through anything, but no I don't sit there and tweak to get it to sound like another amp. When I dial, I'm going for what I hear in my head. And it gets there for me.

When that thing simulates the tactile push/pull finger response of an overloaded tube power section, let me know.
The pick attack and overall plastic tone, IMO give that thing away for what it is

Sure thing Mr. Diarrhea medicine user named guy. Sure thing.

Scott,

Brother, you are 1000% welcome here any time you want to pop in. Man we are all into the same things this aint the Mongols and the Angels   . I am on your site all the time as well (mostly in the classifieds).

Sorry Scott,

That is loser Carl we have to ban him daily, he is off his meds. banned again.

click on "axe FX 3 amps"

check out the Cinnamon Girl tone. Sure sounds like a small amp power section grinding away to me.

I've played that clip for lots of people, everyone assumes it's amps, if I don't mention I did it with the Axe FX.

Oh and- that as done on old firmware, quite awhile ago.

Well, i can't wait for my Boogie Mark V to show up. After that i may just save up for an Ax-Fx. I really don't feel like buying multiple amps so if it can get me at least 90% close to a lot of amps out there I'll be happy. PLus, with all it's effects it will save me money in the long run so i won't be dropping 100 bucks 100 bucks there on dirt boxes.

Now, let's just see if any other company steps up and challenges Fractal.

Killer stuff Pete. I sent the link of the clip you did on the Fractal site to another friend without telling him it was an AxeFx and he was raving about the tone, needed to know what amp it was recorded with  I'm a believer after getting to spend a few hours with one.
