this guy did a great job with an axefx demo:

still note the tinge of direct/model sizzle on all the amp tones but the effects are killer!

Yes, he's a cool guy too. I like his Holdsworth stuff. By the way, I tried about four delays yesterday, Replex is still king:-)

replex--it's why i bought it in the first place...bulky, cumbersome, input is a bit touchy using it in a loop, no tap, but man does it have the sound.

The 7.x series firmware was released after that video...

does version 7 address the fizz factor on the amp models?

even though this guy is using external cabs and a marshall tube power amp, it sounds really direct to me on this demo. not terrible, but not tube smooth.

braddah cuz - the black box through my Bogner power section into A)Bogner OS 2x12 B) Marshal 2061cx cab C) Pure Sixty Four 1x12 - sounded and felt like.....an amp, a real amp. Fizz free....

I have zero need for that box but want it bad, I should just off my DL4 and get one.

yeah but the effects sound really really sweet!

Pat,

I know you could get what you want out of that box just as Ralph has, one are one of those guys that KNOWS what you want and would find it.

I agree but it also could have been his cabs. Im not so sure those little GK's would do it justice.

maybe some of the brittle culprit but i'm not buying that argument in general.

i can use the CHEAPEST cabs and power on great tube amp front end and make it sound warm and tube-like. but it doesn't work the other way around.

maybe a valvulator in the loop of the axefx would help. my friend recently picked up this UA preamp:

and it turned her taylor guitar tone from thin and brittle into something wonderful.

one of these in the loop of the axefx, or maybe a fractal/atomic designed interface box like a dumblelator loop box, to insert in the loop of the axefx, may be just what the doctor ordered.

Pat, Go try one for yourself and stop listening to demos. That guy is using the stock patches and Id be willing to bet that he has all of the sims still on minus the cab emulation. There are infinite possibilites with the axe and you NEED to sit down with it.

i would imagine it would!
but brah that's a $3000 power section into high end cabs!!

i'd probably go 2 trademark 21 60 watt powered 1x12 cabs. pau

I like the clean and effects, but none of the dirty tones did anything for me. But is he just running it through those monitors behind him?

Funny thing, when i hear the guys rave about it i get interested. Then i listen to clips and videos and i get turned off by it. There are some good clips out there but they are outnumbered by the bad one's by a fair margain.

there are SO many people that use and love the DL4....i mix sound for 4 players that use them, and very effectively.

but if we are talking about TONE, and i mean classic tape delay camp tone, this thing shines. and it goes from fairly clear digital delay to the wooly vintage tone with the ability to dial in end to end, and the dual head delay is just spacey good.

a/b'ed against the t-rex replica there was no contest. i liked it better than the chandler echo, akai headrush II, mxr carbon copy, dd20, boss space echo pedal, danecho, deluxe memoryman...

i haven't tried the empress delay or the damage control or memory lane 2, but the clips i heard don't have the fatness of the replex.

echolution is also really fat and warm with more features but people complain of noise issues.
memory man with hazari is nice but not as fat and vintagey as the replex

What really makes me laugh is that I know the tones that you like and its in the Axe-fx. It would probably take me less the 2 minutes to show you what this thing can do and I'm pretty sure I'd piss myself watching your face. You like boogie tones and this thing has it in spades plus an assload more. Ive got way to many things on my plate these days and very little time otherwise I would have already posted a proper clip of this thing. You are another candidate like Pat who needs to try the thing in person instead of listening to clips.

Wow that thing is $800. I have a VHT valvulator but have never used it in a loop. Would that warm up a digtal guitar pre or a piezo system?

Besides Ralph, are there any actual clips of a guy using one in a live band situation? Meaning bass, drummer, keys, etc. Not just some guy playing like the Edge nude in his bedroom. Also, how about some mid-gain AC/DC tones, no one I've heard has nailed that down yet without Zakk Wylde amounts of gain dialed in.

Pete Thorn did some lower gained clips direct. Id gather that if I took those presets, took off the cab sims and piped through a greenback cab, it would sound pretty cool IMHO
