My advice...grab any simple preset bypass everything but amp and cab, scroll through the cab models and pick one, my starting point is the 4x12 cali, do the same with the amp. dial amp eq, change global eq to tame top and/or bottom.

or load this up
http://axechange.net/preset.aspx?preset_id=926

Do you recommend turning off the cab sims if he is going through a regular guitar cabinet, or do you use those as well ?
I use the cab block as the last in line, with a efx loop before, that way out1 gets the cab sim, and out 2 gets it without.
But no I don't want to hear the cab sim through a guitar cab.

I need to play one of these in person. I know internet videos and clips are not a be-all-end-all determination, but aside from a handful of good tones, I'm hearing a lot of bad stuff out there. Someone posted the Axe-FX version of a Trainwreck on YouTube, and it's just nowhere close. Some SLO videos floating out there are really rough. And i heard a few Brown sound videos that sounded no better than what I've heard from a POD. I know I'll be pointed to the Dweezil video, but I'm willing to bet he would be able to cop that tone on a number of given amps.

I guess it's just the nature of any piece of gear that's soo versatile. Look at Mesa Boogies. They can be made to sound like shit in the wrong hands pretty easy. What I'm hearing can also be a testament to how faithful the Axe is to what it's trying to model. You know, on any decent amp....shit in, shit out. All the best gear in the world won't cover up the player. Hope i don't sound like a douche for saying that, but maybe some guys out there should put down the video cameras.

Oh well, I'm looking forward to hearing one in person at the NY amp show.

Can't have it both ways...if Dweezil can make any amp sound hip...and I believe he can after seing ZPZ a few times, then you gotta accept that there will be guys that make any amp, or any piece of gear like crap. Pick any gear and run a search you get the same bell curve, some crap, some great and the mjority between adequate and average.
Personally I don't get how youtube has replaced as the defacto clip hosting.
I mean the encoding of mp3 is crap, but by comparison god like.

I don't like that at all. I'd rather hear audio clips but i guess it's easier for people to make a short video clip. And it seems that video clips get a lot more feedback/attention compared to audio clips. I guess people still need to use their eyes.

I honestly believe some people would rather trust a youtube clip over an mp3 when checking out clips, because the majority of them share the same lowest common denominator which is a crappy camera mic.

Where with an mp3 there can be more trickery involved, someone may just outright lie about the signal chain they used to record the clip, used post processing, boosted the amp but didn't disclose it, etc.

Of course you can still mislead people with a youtube clip as well.

But I agree youtube clips tend to make mp3's sound really high quality in general...lol.

Funny you say that. I have had numerous requests to post You Tube video clips instead of plain audio clips. I would much rather post audio clips. They represent my "in room" tone much better.

No one in this PC culture has the balls to have a white boy saying lines like that in movies anymore.

Can the AxeFx do a good "Univibe" effect?

I think that kage said that he still uses his Mojo Vibe because he prefers it to the Axe FX's model...

...and to think MP3 is a lossy audio encoding that was/is considered crap by audiophiles. I suppose it is good if compared to home video recording, but its far from a gold standard.

I read an article recently where record producers / engineers were lamenting the new goal of sounding good in MP3 meant greater compromises in the studio. Not being a professional, recording for major releases, is this common? Are people targeting MP3 as the main playback of your music, and making compromises in the studio as a result? (I could have misread the article as well, I sure can't find it).

Back on topic,

As I sold my Ultra a few months ago and regretted it ever since, I plan to get a new Ultra as soon as the funds are available (selling some gear, ADA bass rig will be sold on Saturday to a local buyer), selling off my Randall RM4 that I've had less than a month, '93 BC Rich American Custom Spider bass anyone? ;) PM me!). I'm hoping to pull the trigger on a new Ultra purchase by June. I can say selling my Ultra is the dumbest brain-fart I've had in awhile, hopefully the last! I reread some of my old posts on it too! All I can say is:
    :bash: :bash: :bash:

it says shipping included, but during checkout it adds 40 some bucks?

It hit me not long ago that no matter what else is in my rig, the Axe is a HUGE part of what I want to hear and I would not want to be without it for any reason, so I just had to.

switching speed

does it have instant switching between presets or is it glitchy ala lexicon and eventide?

one thing about my eggie/gforce rig right now is switching speed is great.

also, can you kick on a virtual stompbox or effect within a given preset instantaneously?
Reel him in boys!

Not yet, give him a little line and then a quick tug to set the hook. :D
