Gibson Les Paul Special's are the best $700 in the world. IMO I got 2, hum and p90. Ugly TV Yellow and they kill.

Gibson faded V. Get it for 700 and slay all the innocents in near proximity.

An ESP Eclipse LTD might be a good idea.

He mainly plays rock/metal, but he dabbles in pretty much everything.

Keep 'em coming!

I had a $499 guitar years ago (ESP LTD EC-400?). To this day it is one of the best guitars I've ever played. I just got an awesome one and pissed I ever got rid of it. Stayed in tune, no noise, great fretboard. There was nothing wrong with it at all.

Used edwards or charvel maybe or used gibson, U can find a nice used sg standard or lp studio for around that much also. I would definatly go with used as it will put the grade guitar u can get for that money up into the next bracket not to mention that U wont loose any money on resale as someone else has already taken the hit. U can find nice deals used especially in this economy if u are patient and keep checking ebay , craigslist, rigtalk, etc.

All or all of these would work:

Used ESP Mirage (MIJ)
New Godin Freeway SA (for $769 it even comes with a 13 pin to control Roland Synth Gear)!
Used Jackson Professional Guitars (early '90 MIJ)
Used Ibanez Prestige Guitars (MIJ)
NOS (new old stock) Jackson DK2M/DKMG/SLSMG
Gibson LP Faded (USA) are also a great choice as mentioned earlier in this thread but, get it from a place where you can try out a few at a time and time home the pick of the litter if you're going with a Gibbie
PRS SE Single Cut (pretty darn consistent so you can pretty much pick by the color)

I have an excellent Epiphone Les Paul Standard Heritage Cherry Sunburst for sale--it's been professionally set up and has a Factory-Nickel-Covered Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge and a Factory-Nickel-Covered Gibson 490R in the neck, and the neck volume pot is a Dimarzio push-pull that coil-splits both pickups. Street on the Plus Top guitars is $549 and I've got probably another $200 in upgrades in it, but I'd probably let it go (including an SKB-style hard case) for $600 shipped PP gift. I'll have it up in the classifieds later today with pics 'n such. It plays and sounds great. Will cover any style of music.

Something used. LP Studio, an SG, a Hamer. Since you mentioned not strat shaped, I haven't even mentioned Charvel because I'm following instructions.

Yeah as said, I'd look for a used SG or Hamer at that price point for something close to an LP. Ibanez/LTD/Jackson/Charvel/Schecter etc. are all cool in their own way but not what I'd be looking at if I wanted an LP sound.

Yes, you found that out when you were trying to sell it.

+1 for the PRS SE Singlecut, awesome guitar for the money.

The new PRS SE 245 also looks really nice and would be closer in scale length to the LP.

LTD EC1000......LP shape but thinner, fastest neck I've ever played. Picked up my last one used for $300. Buy new for $700. Great out of the box, huge value for the money.
