Shred, I'm sure it was a simple matter of new valves.

Actually I replaced the tubes with higher grade ones and it got even better. Anyway that was years ago..........moving on

I bought the Avenger from GC used but in the same store that day I pitted it against a Uberschall, Cobra, VH4..........at the time I liked it hands down......it was one of those amps that had the mojo...I bought one later and it was good but whatever extra flava was present with the other one seemed to not be there.....

I think part of that is the transformers that Mike used. I played a Hotrod 50 with mercury's a while back that had some mojo. Wish I would bought it. The Avenger line has gone through various ones, Mercury Magnetics, Marvel, Onetic's, and Pacific. I've had Avenger's with Marvel and Pacific. I would say the difference is slight but there is one even though I'm told that they are spec'd the same.

That's what Mike told me when we spoke at Length (About 1 Hour) He said that the Transformers make little difference to the tone cause they are Spec'd The Same no matter who makes the Transformer. I have played the Mercury Tranny ones & mine is the Onetic's one & they sounded identical, Both of the ones i played had the Loop installed by Mike.

He said the same to me too. I called cause i was worried about using that Head through such a Low Wattage Cab....I have a Marshall 1960BHW Cab which is 120 watts. I was worried that the bottom end would be weak....It most certainly is not!

It's because when i used that cab with the Jubilee i had at the time (2555SL) THERE WAS NO! Bottom end at all. Finally Figured out that i should use an old 90's Marshall Cab with the Jube & it sounded amazing but i had to sell the Jube.

I love my Metalhead modded 800, tight and crushing. Sadly I’ve yet to play another Metalhead amp or preamp that sounds the same as mine.

Ya know it just dawned on me that WiseBlood has the single ch. Superlead preamp into the old school 2150. We need a clip of that one too.
