Thing is, when you EQ an Ecstasy to cut through, it doesn't sound like an Ecstasy anymore
And then you might as well get another amp
Nah I don't agree with that. Could be your guitars! What speakers are you using?

...what helped me eq it was to set up my SLO 100 and XTC with a "Headbone Switcher". I managed to dial the XTC nice and bright where it cuts nicely in a band situation.
could you post a pic or something of your settings? i've modded my XTC for more brightness, but i'm always curious how other folks are dialing them in.
Mine is a 100B. I set the pre EQ to the brightest position, trebble 1:00, mid 1:00, bass 12:00 (depending on guitar) presence at about 10:00. Not sure of your model but I set the excurtion switch to the middle position. Rear panel is set to "Modern".

I'd have to try those settings, but technically, that's dialed even darker than what I usually do
B2 sounds terribly ice-picky, unless you totally crank the gain (I use B1... N is muffled)
L excursion is way too boomy (I use T)... middle position on a 100B appears to be M
Presence is closer to 1-2 o'clock on mine

That's my third Ecstasy model, so it's not particular to the one I own now
As far as speakers go... V30s, Creambacks M, Creambacks H, G12-65, G12H(55) to name a few, I've tried a bunch of them

Blanket still in effect

Wow, could be your guitars. I have found that high output pickups sound muddy in the XTC, I have had best results with medium range output. I also like an Alder body, although I have a LP "Classic with a 500t and 480 I think which sounds nice and bright. I'd like to hear any clips you have of this "Blanket" effect. I have played a 101b, Classic and 6L6 20th, I do prefer the 100B for its' openess and punch.
I also have a 20th Shiva with EL 34s' although it is on the dark side I would harly call it a "Blanket" effect, it sounds glorious. I think V30s' are the key to cut through the mix.

I'm also a fan of medium output pickups (for humbuckers), something in the 8-12 Resistance range.
I agree that V30's sound good with the XTC... Creambacks H75 sound even better.
Note that I'm mostly talking about the Blue channel, I don't really use the Red channel, I guess with more gain and solid EQing it can cut through. To me, the signature XTC sound is the Blue channel, it sounds awesome, but yet muffled. Hence the love/hate relationship I have with this amp. Having the Blue pedal, I can't justify keeping the amp for one single channel. I guess those using all 3 channels can get much more out of it
