I like the 104 better than any Ecstasy I have had before. That includes 100 A, 100B, 101A 101B, Classic and 20th. the feature set and tones are really great .

Agreed the 104BV I like a lot more then a stock 101b. My 104 even holds up to my Snorkler and Pandora.

Calling the 104 an xtc is almost a lie. I think the 101b value held because the 104 just doesn’t do the same thing. Wish i hadn’t flipped my 101b sight unseen for the 104.

When I tried a new 104BV, it just was a big meh to me. It didn’t have a particular character like the 101B has. Seemed more like any other typical high gain. The Snorkler that was above it in the store was more fun and had a more distinct character.
I get why metal guys would like the 104BV.

Nice! So... original or Deluxe? Forget about all the switching options and versatility. Plug in, killer pissed off high-gain sound... which amp are you reaching for?

OG. The Deluxe is fun but much harder to dial in. The OG was easy: plug in, set both gains to 8, EQ to taste, let it rip.

It’s just the nature of a phone recording (or similar) where the sound doesn’t really change through all the settings. Even with headphones I can’t hear any significant changes and it seems this amp sacrifices juiciness for tightness. I enjoy your OG Snorkler clip a fair bit more.
Would be nice if this lead to people offloading their Snorkler at a decent price to get this but the new 104 didn’t exactly crash 101B’s

I would say your assessment is correct. This amp is not as "juicy" as I remember the OG being. It's tighter, stiffer, and sharper. I'm not sure I necessarily like it more than the OG. I have to spend more time with it. It's way harder to dial in.

Dude, thanks for sharing! I love my snorkler and never thought I could sell it. But this is tempting me...is it worth?? From that clip I cannot really understand. Can you still get the OG sounds? This is the most important part (at least for me)....I don't care about versatility. I mean, I have 3 other amps for that....

I think if you like your OG, just keep it. You can get the OG sounds out of the DLX but you have to dial it in, which can be difficult. The OG is simpler and easier to get a good sound.

Thanks for the video Mike! Couple comments:

Unless the mode switch is now a 3-way, I don't think that PURPL.B switch is a second bright switch. I heard every other switch when you flipped them but didn't hear anything when you changed that one. It's potentially the way you'd engage Purple but I don't think it did anything during the video as your foot switch was connected (which took over). Separate switch makes me think optional "boost" that can be added on either Blue or Red (like 101B) but the foot switch layout makes me think it's just a dedicated path/Channel (like a Red + gain stage). If true, very Bogner to not just add a 3-way Mode lol

Standard Snorkler bright switch is only active on Red as well, so that's not changed.

I suspect that if you prefer the 104 over the 101, you'll prefer the Snorkler DLX over the OG.

My standard studio workflow is: Amp -> Fryette PS2-A (XLR out) -> Fractal AxeFX III Mk II Turbo (XLRs out) -> UA Apollo Twin X Quad -> UA Luna

I typically use API preamps and channel strips, though sometimes I'll use the Neve 1073. I generally only use SSL stuff for buses and mastering.

I like phone/room clips much more than close mic. My personal preference would be no attenuator, though. I have a Power Station too and it's great. But it does color the sound because you're re-amping the signal through another power amp with its own depth, presence, and bright circuits. For demoing amps, I prefer to just go straight in, through a REAL cab, with no re-amping or IRs or other nonsense. Guitar –> amp –> cab and room mic of some sort.

I hear you but just as a counter argument, I'd rather hear the demos of these amps at a level where their power valves are saturating a bit as I think it dramatically changes the sound and feel, regardless how good a MV is implemented, and I don't think that would be possible at a residential setting w/o load box/reamp box.

I mean even with a simple setting like guitar -> amp-> cab-> room mic, the end result will still be at the mercy of how that mic signal is recorded and processed (mic placement, mic type, eq, compression etc)

So IT IS possible…and yes I love the OG, just wondering What I am missing. The power section improvement is not clear to me though. Given a DLX set up to OG specs (switch positions etc) does it sound bigger by any means?

I totally get it, there's just practical realities for me. I live in a townhouse so I have shared walls with neighbors on both sides and the PS is a good way to push the amp without pissing everyone off. I try to make the PS as transparent as possible by using the bypass mode to compare the two tones. I almost always end up using no depth, no presence, and leaving both reactive load parameters set to flat. I also always keep the pad off, because it does affect the tone significantly imo.

I disagree somewhat about IRs. IRs are a great way to quickly hear what an amp will sound like with a certain speaker, cab, or microphone (or mix of microphones), which is super useful in recording contexts. The IRs from ML Sound Lab, York Audio, and Ownhammer are so good it would actually be difficult for me to replicate using traditional engineering methods. But you're right that there's nothing like a real speaker in a real cab pushing air.
