I think they're great amps! Run that boost in front of green crunch. Very JCM800.

Spot on! The green channel with a TS9 or OCD boosting it (set low gain, high volume) is TOTALLY 2203ish. I had both about the same time.

Oddly enough, I had one at the same time I bought my first Friedman Runt 50. I kept the DSL, and returned the Runt after about a week. I ran a Spark Boost and Wylde OD on green crunch, and it was thrash metal heavenly. Beefy as fuck too. I also ran an MXR 10-Band in the loop, to be fair, with just a tick of a bump in the lows, and low mids. That, and solid tubes/good bias, yields a pretty damn good tone. I certainly disagree with "mediocre", they'll flat-out kill, if you know what you're doing.

JJ KT77's are the shit in the DSL. I'd typically use a Tungsol in V1, JJ ECC83S in V2 & 3, and Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V4. Punchy.

I've thought about picking up another DSL ever since I sold the 50 that I had. It doesn't get any better in a $500ish rock amp. I've owned most tube amps from cheap to boutique... and the JCM2000 DSLs are ROCK MACHINES. Just plug in, boost, and PLAY. No tweaking and dialing til the cows come home. I hate tweaking.

For me, my medium between this and say Friedman or Bogner is Splawn. I snagged my PM for $1000 shipped a long time ago and my Nitro for $1150. They are not outlandishly pricey, but they deliver in spades tone-wise for me. Good feature set for me with footswitchible gains and cleans for me.

I would rock a JCM2000 DSL if I didn't have my Spawns.

On a side note, I plan on building a 2203 with heyboer iron next year. That will get my jonesing for a vintage Marshall tone. I gotta start my bass man first though lol. It will be a late night build in one swoop, lol. Whenever that happens I don't know.

Agreed. My QR was an amazing amp. Snagged it and a matching slant Splawn 4x12 for $850. A complete STEAL. Wish I still had it. The Friedman stuff was better at rolling off the guitar volume and retaining dynamics. But at full guitar volume that QR sounded as good as anything. Loved that amp.

That was a deal. DAMN!

I have only played a BE100 once for just a few minutes and I loved it, but they are more than I could justify, and either I am used to the kind of Splawn bite and may actually prefer it.

For one Friedman JJ, I got both Splawns and two Riveras. (knucklehead was $550ish maybe $600, but it came with =C= and the KTre I traded a guitar that I had $350 invested in). I feel that I have more fun with cheaper amps.

I hear you, and yes... the Rivera stuff is an amazing value for sure! I've dug them ever since Damon Johnson was endorsing the Knuckleheads. He's one of my musical heros.
Gigged a Quianna in a country rock band.

You owe it to yourself to spend time with a flagship Friedman at some point, just to experience that. The newer Deluxe BEs are friggin amazing. I had a BE50 in the man cave for a few weeks recently. It very nearly became Friedman #7 for me. There's not a more versatile amp on earth. And that TONE!

I will buy a Friedman in a decade, after the hype is over and I can snag one for less than they go for now. Then everybody will be getting a hard on for what's great then. Then I will snag a BE100. Lol.

Next on my Amp list is a pitbull UL. I am buying another trumpet prior to that though, as I need a second professional Bb horn sooner than later

Back on topic, Laney GH100L, DSL50, XXX, JSX 5153 50w all kick ass in the $400-$600 range on the used market IMO.

Pitbull UL is cool for metal. I didn't hate mine (had the EQ). But I had an XTC Classic at the time and the UL got sold off. Still, I gigged it in a hard rock/metal band and it killed it with my ESP Eclipses and Schechter 7-string.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.

The red channel is completely unusable in my opinion. The green channel is awesome! I like it unboosted as well. There are great classic rock tones to be had in that amp

I got a KILLER tone out of the red channel with the lower gain switch and VFE Dragon to boost. Tight not too much gain. Just a nice tight Marshall tone.

Absolutely love the red channel on the "lower" gain setting. Gain at noon, nice boost up front, Through my Friedman 412, MUAH. Hot Rodded Tone Monster.

I like OD1 on the red as well. Classic Marshall. But, I only prefer it on the 100 watt. Beefier.

I have a dsl 50 and dsl 100. Other guitarist in my band has 2 50 watt and a 100, The 100 is louder, but theres not a lot of difference between the two in tone. A slightly bigger low end, but not enough to notice at the same volume. We've played them side by side on stage, and the 50 holds it's own pretty well. It's about the same as any other 50 vs 100 watt marshall. 2203,2204 1959, 1987. Have had them all. Have 2203 and 2204 now too. 50 watt Marshall's have always had a reputation to scream.

Agreed on all points

Let me also take this opportunity to say that my JCM 2000 DSL100 w/ foot switch is for sale for $550. Only selling because my DSL50 has had a Classictone Tranny and choke installed and I prefer 50w amps to 100 most of the time.

Tons of amazing shit has been recorded with gear that many members of various forums scoff at. What REALLY matters is the playing, the writing, and the recording. A skilled, motivated, and inspired player with a "mediocre" amp owns a lesser player/writer/recorder with a boutique setup. That is truth. It becomes a dog chasing its tail at some point and is counter-productive to actually doing something real.

Wise words ??
