I love them both and cant pick a better one. I think Het as a rhythm player and writer but Dime has the lead licks no doubt

On the other hand, any experienced guitar player can basically play any riff James ever wrote.
The real question is could any experienced guitarist have written them?

with a case of coors light, a bottle vodka and a bag of coke.....sure why not?

Imagine this scenario:

Hetfield died instead of Dimebag.

There is your answer to this thread :D

well to answer the OP, Hetfield, it's universally aknowledged that Metallica are the BIGGEST metal band of all time.....

BUT, I honestly haven't stuck a Metallica CD in my player in probably 5 years.... Vulgar Display was rockin all the way to work tonight. :D

I'd rather listen to bonded by blood. ;)

Maybe another way to look at it is like this. why is it easier for young people or anyone for that matter to learn Metallica tunes over Pantera tunes? Dime didn't settle for "dugga dugga dugga" whereas Het did. Metallica's melodies appealed to the masses more than Pantera's, but if you had a cutting heads between Het and Dime, I think we can all agree who woulda been throwing their guitar down on the floor, oh wait, that was Kurt...lol

They both served their purpose, but Dime's riffs were and still are masterpieces, just as Charlie Parker's works was and is.

James Hetfield. Love Dime but James is the triple threat. Tight player. Excellent songwriter. Great singer.

Yeah, so what? The world doesn't care about cover bands or copy cats. The definition of musician is to create music. ZZTOP and AC/DC know about 4 chords between them both and they've written some of the greatest rock songs ever.

Being original and coming up with great music is MUCH MUCH MUCH harder than being a technician. Any Joe Schmo can sit with a metronome and robotically practice scales, songwriting talent is something you're born with. There's a lot of people out there who can play Scarified, but lock those guys in a room and restrict them to 4 chords and see how many of them can write a hit song.

I love Pantera & Dime- just a totally killer player and great songwriter to boot. But as far as influential goes I'd have to say Hetfield & Metallica- he's written some of the heaviest & best riffs of all time & influenced my playing much more.

Would've loved to hear how killer Metallica might have been with Dime playing lead.

Or anyone else besides Hammett for that matter.

Dimebag is obviously a better player but Metallica and Hetfield wrote superior songs, which is what truly matters at the end of the day. Plus Hetfield was much more influential. I'm not really a big Dimebag fan but I enjoy hearing him now and again.

as for rhythm guitar tone, hetfield crushed dime. we all know who is the more proficient player here is, and i love dime's leads. hetfield helped shape my rhythm playing big time.

As a Pantera fan I disagree with all of that! I'm a huge metallica fan, but they never did for me what Pantera does to this day.

Thats why it's hard to compare them and really no point. I think the funny thing is Dime COULD play the fast downpicking parts, as he exibited it by learning Metallica tunes by ear and playing them just as well, hence why he was offered the job.

But he had a different style, so hard to compare them, are they both metal bands...yes are they both heavy as fuck....yes. Apples to oranges.

just my opinion of course.

I'm not much of a sax/charlie parker fan either, but when I hear Randy playing his shit, it blows me away. Same goes for Dime. but thats how I am about music, especially the shit that brings tears to my eyes when I hear it/appreciate it. Same goes for Het, or anyone for that matter, their pain...it isn't really fair to judge it. Jim Morrison's poetry, to read it its cool and all, but to hear him recite it...is where the magic lives...

You disagree that Dime was the better lead player? And wether you care to admit it or not, Hetfield influenced a lot more people than Dime ever will, millions more people listen to Metallica. Record sales and popularity do come into to play when you're talking about who inlfuenced more people.
