I would be interested in this.

In my experience, the good IRs are fucking exactly the same as micing a speaker. So much in fact that when i had a line out on the amp, i would just run it into two notes while playing at volume in the room even though I had the mic setup.

I wont speak to amp sims, because that isn't my experience and I dont have a lot of experience there, but the speaker IRs are there

I agree, but here's the secret the globalists wont tell you - two different V30s made on the same day in the same factory can sound different.

So it's possible they made an IR of the best sounding Raven ever produced, and the majority aren't that amazing. Unlikely, yes, but possible

So that's why I'm trying to be measured in my praise of it

Just for people curious, here's a (very) quick and (very) dirty demo so you can see what im so excited about

Not in a mix or doubled or anything, but just me flubbing out some chords with a friedman JEL profile with two IRs

The first is the Mesa spec V30 that every youtuber uses, the second is the raven

yes, the v30 sounds louder and meaner, but the raven sounds like what the v30 sounds like after you do all the post to fix it LOL

My micing experience is mostly with a sm7b. That mic was very forgiving and extremely transparent. I think i must have been extremely lucky, because I always mic the top right speaker in a cab and they have always given me what i hear out of the cab.

I have used quite a few different speakers, and that gives me a great idea of what I like or don't like in any given celestion, because in clips i can hear parts of other celestions i have used and then know that it will or won't sound right to me in the room

Yep, after you train your ears to hear what a mic hears, it becomes way way easier to get what you "want" out of a speaker

And you can hear it in IRs, too

I feel that I would be a bit blind outside of celetions, but it has helped me a lot so far

I probably am too, to a certain extent 🤷‍♂️

But I vastly prefer celestions most of the time, so I'm biased

I love other shit too, like the 12L, but to me distorted guitar IS celestion
Have you tried fane f70s?

I have never micd one, but it pairs really well with certain amps

I hear what you mean about V30 here. Still has some bite but its not as grating. Definitely smoother and darker but it doesnt sound muddy. I can see me liking it more than a DV-77.

Funny no one has mentioned the Karnivore in this thread lol. I think i still prefer the new V30 to the karnivore but to your point earlier, there's a ton of similarity and depending on where you mic the speaker I genuinely don't think id pull them out of a mix in a blind test

I am just not an eminence guy 🤷‍♂️ It might be a good speaker (kohle certainly knows his shit) but I've been burned so many times trying to give Eminence a chance, I'm just done lol

From what everyone says it probably belongs on this same continuum though

But yeah you can clearly hear why I'm so impressed with the Raven in the IR - it's basically a V30 but without any of the drawbacks people ascribe to V30s, or the kinks that you have to fuck with in a mix to "fix" it or make it fit

Did this the other day with the raven and recto. Caution it’s aggressive lol. Doing a shootout with the karnivore too. I go back and forth what I prefer but Celestion just always seems to win me over in the mids.

The tone itself is aggressive sure, but you can definitely hear that the raven smooths out that super aggressive mid spike of the V30

Didn’t even realize I uploaded an alternating one between recto and Karnivore. Sleep deprived today. Same exact amp settings and everything. Pretty much everything at noon on a recto boosted with dirty tree. Bass up just a tad and gain at 1. Cab is Engl xxl but took the metal grill off for more proximity effect because in my opinion the mic sits too far away with the grill on (it’s genuinely an extra 2 inches further over a Marshall or Mesa grill).

Yeah they are super similar in frequency response

I think it comes down to just a bit of that eminence hollowness we know. Although it’s much less in the Karnivore than their other lineup and significantly better than anything they’ve done before IMO

Yeah I agree, if thats a karnivore its significantly better than any eminence i've tried to record lol

I still would be way more interested in the raven, just based on the IRs i've messed around with - it's got the midrange "sweetness" of a v30 without the actual spike in frequency, if that makes sense

They really knocked it out of the park with the Raven. I love it. I need to get like another two cabs to try and run it in lol. Maybe a traditional sized recto and traditional sized Engl instead of oversized.
